What oil?
« on: 09 February 2011, 09:14:12 »

Greetings and salutations,

I would like to ask for oil suggestion for my 3.0 Omega ('97)
Now its running some 5W40 oil, but I have to change it.
I am thinking about Shell 5W30 and Shell 5W40 (do not know if there is big difference...)
I am doing mainly short trips (cca 10 - 15 km) in hilly area, so for that case I prefer 5W30 since it should be ready sooner (if I understand it correctly).
But my Omega has more than 200.000km mileage, so I do not know if it will be better to use thickier oil, as I have read somewhere...
So, what would you prefer? :)

Thanks for help

general acceptance here is to use semi synthetic 10-40 vx/gm.. and with frequent changes say 3K-5K miles..  for a 97 model car, 10-40 better suited than 5-30.. as far as I know 5-30 are used by honda engines which their clearances are designed for..

If there's any oil consumption the thicker oil will probably minimise it. Otherwise, either grade will be acceptable.

GM's own 10w40 and 5w30 are very good value in the UK if you can get trade prices (retail prices are very expensive).

Both oils have a 5w rating so should be good during cold starts. The only difference in grade is at full running temperature. I assume both are probably fully synthetic?

Frequent changes are the most important thing on an Omega, IMHO. They seem to be prone to the oil getting very sooty and, where long change intervals have been the norm, deposits have caused the pick-up strainer to get blocked.

I would change a semi-synthetic oil every 3-5k miles (5-8k km). Fully synthetic oil probably up to twice as long if the car is used in a good range of driving conditions.

which is why SWMBO's Smart gets Vx's finest 5w30 despite the insistance of the forums & independants that you should only use Mobil 1  ;) ;)

Thanks for replies :)
I think oil consuption is minimal, which is strange as I suspect bad oil cooler too (sings of oil in coolant). Engine is running very quietly (compared to my previous 2.5 Omega, but that was older so I dont know how this will contionue). This time the oil will be free as I have many points from Shell (it is not hard to get much fuel with Omega :) ), so I will trade them for their oil :)
So I will get 5w40 :) I was just worried of the hills as I have one big to climb from my parking lot and also there is one right from my work :(

Thanks again for help :)

Stick with Shell, it is a good oil.
I use 10w40 Shell Helix and change it every 6000 miles or yearly whatever comes first.
Avoid Castrol oils though

For all my Vauxhall Engines I have used Wilkinsons 10 40

£12 for 5 litres and it has been fine, used it in countless cars now for years
