How rich when cold? Very or very very very?
« on: 03 March 2011, 11:09:37 »

Stupid question time from me again;

Since I didn't make it to the meet (grumble grumble) to compare directly with anyone..

Does everyone elses car stink of petrol after starting from cold? It's clearly very, very, very rich when cold - richer, I think, than the MR2 (which is about 11:1 cold and has no CAT)..

(I know, I really should get some live data pulled to see if the MAF/AIT/O2/coolant temp sensors are off.. but I'm at work and it's cold outside!)

Yep, can defo smell petrol on cold start up, so very rich? Yes.   Very very very rich, dont think so.

Depends how wide your "very rich" scale is i guess?  ;)

Iirc Kevin commented at the meet that the omega runs very rich from cold. Think thats what he said, he had his head under a bonet at the time.

I was judging by nose, so I'm guessing my scale is pretty wide ;)

Good to know anyway - explains why the short-journey economy to work is so dire ;D (though I've always wondered why I still only get 22mpg on a long motorway cruise @70 - I figured it'd be higher than that)

If mine doesn't start on the first go it's reluctant to go on the second try. If you start it a couple of times from cold in a short space of time it'll eventually flood. I'd say it's a bit rich when cold.

Probably a strategy to get the cats up to temperature - you know, burning extra fossil fuels in order to save the planet. ::)

 ;)

At a constant 70 mine would be doing more like 32+ MPG, I reckon.

I'm saving the planet by using up all the petrol faster.. that way other people can't do any damage.

That's my argument and I'm sticking to it ;D

I do see that on the instant mpg display on an absolutely flat stretch of road, but the slightest incline pulls it right back to mid 20's, so on a ~100 mile motorway run it averages to about 22 once you include the beginning & end of the journey on local roads.

That's not right - you need to look at live data.
Is it getting up to temperature?

My newly aquired 3.2 returned 31mpg (calculated properly) on it's trip home from the midlands. This was 75mph indicated speed on M5.

Thermostat is on my list to do actually - on a run (on a cold day) the temperature will drop down to ~82C on the gauge, and up to 85-90C on slower roads, turning the fans on as soon as it's in traffic.

I suspect the thermostat is stuck half open and not regulating engine temperature - either that or those kinds of variations are perfectly normal for the Omega ;)

The other option is the coolant temp sensor - I've not seen anyone mention them (at least not often) on the Omega but I've had to change them on other engines in the past to restore economy. That or the MAF. Or the O2 sensors. So yeah.. to avoid shotgunning fixes I really do need to look at live data :)

Without actually checking mine, from memory those temps dont sound too far off to me...?

Interesting to see what the fuel trims are doing re maf.... And a load of other live data stuff I don't fully understand.

22 is low though as others have said.

;D

But yeah - I know my Gendan reader could pull live data off the MR2 (including LT & ST fuel trims), hopefully it'll pull the same from the Omega otherwise I'll have to go and visit Kevin :) (That is, when I find the Gendan, which seems to have gone missing when I moved house.. a year ago..)
