Aux Air Pump - sorry if it's been done before...
« on: 25 February 2011, 14:42:45 »

Yep my Aux air pump on the 2.5 Facelift sounds like the deck of an aircraft carrier (wEEEEEEEEEEsssssEEE) I know it's not MOT'able and having owned a 3rd Gen GM Firebird I know all about the daft emission gadgets they fitted...

So...
To remove the damn thing rather than just pull the fuse ... what 's to do. Blanking the actual inlets to the exhaust I understand but how will the other sensors behave.
My pump normally shuts down after 1min 30sec on start up then idle then the revs drop to tick over - I take it that that is right.

Sorry to wade in like  :)

Just been over the Woodhead to Manchester and back and the car was pure bliss - bit of Zappa on the 4 CD changer ... :)

I recall there is a fuse to pull . Can't remember which. Then you don't have to blank anything off.

I always thought that when the whining susibed that meant oil and water was up to temp and it was safe to set off! ;D

So should the aux air pump on the 2.5 sound like a washing machine on the full spin cycle? A kind of not that loud "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssseeee"?
Sorry for being thick but I'm new to "modern" cars ... having had several Scirocco's .... ahem ::)

Just get hold of a secondhand one and fit that they don't cost that much. I'm thinking there was topic on here before on how to strip one down but i just got a used one and fitted that to one of my older Migs.

It should be fairly quiet if it's in good condition, which doesn't seem to be the case with yours.

To remove the system completely without upsetting the ECU  you need to leave (electrically) connected the solenoid valve which controls a vac-diaphragm/motor which in turn controls a flap valve in the rubber parts of the pipework.

Then it's just a matter of removing everything that's now not pumping air, and closing off resulting orifices in an exhaust-gas-proof manner.

It would be faintly interesting to see what the total weight of removed gubbins came to, minus any added mass of blanking tackle.  I suspect that it  would be fairly insignificant compared to the lardiness of the Omega as a whole.  But it is additional 'messiness' as well as mass in the front of the car.

There is a repair/fix which can be found on the mk4 Golf forum 'UKMkIVs' or similar.  Can't be bothered to dig out the link just now, sorry.

Just unplug it.  Up behind FNS corner of bumper.  Remove it if you want to save a pound or two in weight....

I've removed 2 lots from V6 cars as I've done a cambelt change.

The solenoid needs to be left in place - which is easy enough.

I used the rubber joints into the exhaust pipes to connect to 15mm copper pipes which had end caps soldered in place.

Works a treat. :y

Thanks guys - I'll leave all the gubbins in place for now then maybe strip it all out - doing the copper pipe thing sometime this summer - making sure the valves are left in place so as not to confuse the ECU etc.
Top advice - many thanks!

As it happens, I'll actually be removing my air pump (fully working  :y) tomorrow as the car will be up on a ramp - so if you want a working one then there is one available in Lincoln.

Cheers
