Windscreen Suround
« on: 03 March 2011, 12:55:04 »

Ok, not sure if anyone can answer me this one, but ever since I had my screen replaced the plastic surround is not secured on the drivers side. It flies up on the motorway hitting the roof.

How is this secured, can you get clips to hold it or is it just double side tapped in place (this I doubt!). If clipped can you get them from vauxhall??

Which bit? Top? Side? Bottom?

If it's the bottom it could be the strip that covers the top of the scuttle. This indeed is held in by small plastic "quarter turn" fasteners under the rubber. If they are all missing I'm sure someone here can help you out. If you're only missing a few you might just try spreading out the ones you have.

If it's the top or side bits I don't know I'm afraid.

Better still would be to get Autoglass (or whoever) and insist they fix what they broke!!

Get them back to sort it, or if like me and you cant be bothered I used some Black Roof and Gutter Sealent, the stuff that sticks every where but never really goes hard.

It's the one around the screen, not the scuttle cover. It's completely ripped off this morning so it's now on the backseat. Going to put some double sided tape on it for now and hope it sticks!

You could try silicone sealant, I don't know if it would work, but at least it's not a permanent adhesive like Tiger Bond.

As already said, get whoever replaced the screen back to do it properly, although I fear it may be RAC/Autowindscreens who are, AFAIK, not trading at the moment. It clips into a little plastic channel which is attached to the windscreen. Mine came off about a year after it had been fitted and the RAC windscreen bloke came out and fitted a replacement screen as he had to remove it anyway :y

I know that MDTM has nothing good to say about them but I had good service :y

I recently had my.screen refitted by a mobile fitter he took the vx rubber off and put a simple rubber on which looks better and hopefully will not have the problems that the vx .seems to have. This part is only cosmetic.

When autograrse did mine, it took two of them and when they where done the rubber around the top corners of the screen was a bit puckered up.
There is a bit of a gap on both sides but no water gets in,  I am assuming that as it's all bonded anyway it don't matter none?  Looks to me like they didn't clean the old sealant off too well to start with before they fitted the new screen.
I didn't watch them while they did it....next time!

I have got that black roofing stuff on one of my old cars. It works but you need to keep your brand new chamois leather away from it, otherwise it MIGHT(!) get that sticky shite all over it! :(

Which is further evidence of the shite quality parts they were using.

No issues with the Vx ones.....they last fault free from the day fitted at the factory to the day some windscreen fitter messes with them.

They only cause issues when the screen is replaced and cheap nasty pattern side channels are used where the moulds are poor quality/worn resulting in the retaining barbs not gripping the rubber seal correctly.

They do serve a key role, they act as a primary weather seal (stops excesss water getting down between the screen and pillars) plus they act to keep wind noise down.

Sadly, with Omega screens, been there, done that and bought the T-shirt and it wasn;t until RAC windscreens got genuine parts did the issues go away.

Took Autowindscreens seven weeks and four visits to finally have all the right parts to fit the one on my DTi.

To be fair when they did fit it it was a genuine GM screen (Rain sensor fitted for wipers) and a GM trim. They did a good job of fitting it to be fair... good job really as they no longer exist!

Think it was, as you say, pattern the first time but second time were genuine Vx Channels... I saw them come out of the boxes :y
