« on: 11 March 2011, 14:03:56 »

hi everyone , my omega has a problem , the car seems to wander a lot while driving above 70 ish im costantly having to correct it , there is no play in the steering that i could find whilst on the lift and the bearings etc seem fine , but the car drives much better wen i put 15 inch wheels on the front , but when i put on the mv6 17 s or elite 16s it statrs to behave really erratic im lost with this one , wishbones seem pretty tight too anyone have any ideas

Obviously lower profile tyres to tend to tramline more. Even worse if they are worn.

what tyres are they? including sidewall strength (91, 94, 97?)  some tyres are prone to tramlining on omegas

dont know what the sidewall rating is on them , tbh never had such a problem with a car before , i dont really think tramlining would have this effect it feels like a really bad tie rod or link etc , but all the steering knuckles and joints are spot on , , it darts from left to right with speed constantly correcting back and forth , its not just a pull to the left all the time but driving fast in a straight line it tends to shoot all over the place , but no pull on the steering wheel in any direction

sounds like tramlining to me. Pretty much anything with low-profile tyres will do that to some extent, especially with a steering box and macpherson strut front end.

a good geometry check, steering damper adjustment and maybe alternative tyres will reduce it as much as possible, but it'll still be there to some extent.

how are your rear shocks, I had similar with 1 very bad, and 1 totally knackered shock.

as said, post up your tyre make and model, and all sidewall data and we can do some digging.

Also, what are the front and rear camber settings? Excessive camber can cause it to push one (or both) ways in response to road imperfections

Oh!  It may well be spot on, it's possible to get it very close by eye. Matters little though.

Have a read.  :y
