Just been quoted £88+VAT (trade club) for a V6 water pump, which was at least twice what I expected. Can anyone recommend a suitable (cheaper) but acceptable alternative.

Where did you go for your quote (dealers), I got quoted £64.25+vat (autobahn stormers) trade.

I wouldn't recommend going 'too cheap' on the pump, as it'll mean that the pump will have been build at a budgt price and the bearings may not be quality items, resulting in one knacked pump, leading to allsorts of expensive repairs  .

I bought mine from Buypartsby along with the cambelt kit. The pump was QH and is fine but when I fitted it the VX bolts fouled the impellor as the body of the pump was thinner than the VX item. Washers soon sorted that. Just something to check! Pump was about £28 or £30 from memory.

False saving.    Go GM only on pump and belt kits.

Least you know that tried and tested quality bits are used.  The V6 is a big expensive lump, why take the chance ?

Just had my Cam belt water pump aux belt done on my 3.2 by jamesv6cox,  although I brought genuine belt kit, couldn't justifie the over priced water pump, got the pump and aux belt from local mills auto 58 quid inc vat , although we did have the problem with the 3 vx bolts being to long and catching the pump, lucky I had 3 shorter bolts at hand which solved the problem :-?

"Hoofing-it" has one for sale,  I know nothing about it though.

I used 2 non-vx waterpumps, a friend used a 3rd...ALL failed in a very short time, believe the propellers aren't very strong, possibly made of plastic.

Keep a close eye on your coolant levels.

I've never had a pattern water pump fail on any car... But I do maintain my coolant, with regular changes, and change it every 80k maximum

In the end I have gone for a pattern part. I understand where the GM loyalty comes from, but when you've only paid £500 quid for the car and you are on a budget, you have to weight up prices/value for money. £100 or so just seems too much to me for the pump. I've managed to source a GM belt kit for £90, 20l of semi synthetic all for the price of a simple water pump!! The GM one doesn't even include the o-ring. Vaux have priced it high for a reason, they could have had my business otherwise.

GM ones silly prices now - good quality pattern ones ok - QH from buypartsby good. (and blades are metal!!)

i would have to agree with you here why throw so much money at a car that's worth squat!, i say risk it, keep an eye on levels and if anything is amiss you know your first port of call!
