V Reg 2ltr 16v CDX couple of things
« on: 04 April 2011, 16:46:35 »

Hi all,

I noticed a couple of things on my car over the weekend.  I have only recently got it and was giving it a quick, basic go over looking at lubricants, plugs etc. checking the basics.  A couple of things I would like to ask about....

1) Have noticed the temperature gauge appears to be occasionally stopping working.  It seemed fine for the 130 mile drive I did last friday but over weekend and today I noticed a couple of times that the gauge had been at 0 after driving for a bit.  Not sure (will test more) but it seems to be linked to using the aircon.

Didn't use it at all for the drive last Friday, have used it a couple of times, normally in ECO, just to maintain cabin temperature.  If I turn it off again, the temp gauge will come back within a few minutes!  Obvious suspect is a faulty coolant temp sensor but unsure how that would be linked to the aircon?

2) When checking the plugs they were fairly blackened.  Also noticed that the plug lead that goes into the pot was slightly damn with oil (all four).  The plug nearest the bulkhead (whichever that one is ..1, 2, 3 or 4) even had oil around the spark plug thread when I took it out.  This was very clean oil, looked brand new, whereas the oil in the car certainly isn't new!  Any thoughts.  The plastic plug cover is missing from the engine (bit with EchoTech written on it) if that makes any difference, have already sourced a replacement.

Car runs and idles absolutely fine, no missfiring, no smoke from exhaust, coolant doesn't appear contaminated etc.

Any thoughts?

Not sure about 1, but the gauge sender is shown in the pic below; it isn't what you might call sealed, so corrosion may have made the contact between the wire and the sender intermittent. It's rather hard to reach for investigation and cleaning, but that's where I'd start.

For 2, it may be that careless topping-up of the oil has sent clean oil down into that area as well as into the intended hole.  You're in luck if this turns out to be the case, because the other possibility is that the camcover seal has failed, but that should result in oil the same colour as sump oil in the plugwells.

Thanks for the info.  The oil spill was my initial thought also based on the same reasoning, but I am not a mechanic so unsure.  I have cleaned up the leads etc and was going to give it this week driving then recheck them next weekend so see if they are oiled up again.

Hi Shelby, I have the same symptoms on my 2.2 with Item 1, & i'm told by the guys on here who know omegas inside out that it is due to a faulty thermostat, so i'm changing mine as soon as the weather improves a bit. Abiton has already answered your other queries so 'nuff said  :y

Sounds good to me, will have to look into replacing that then when I get some cash.  Bit skint at the moment having only bought the car last Friday haha.  Although do have my old car on ebay at the moment and hoping to get a few hundred for that  ;)
