You will have to have the geometry done.  The fact that your undoing the shock bolts will throw the camber out and chances are the toe angle will be affected aswell.

Agreed. :y

It's the Mc'p strut to hub carrier bolts that set the camber, and they'll have to come off so it will certainly need setting up afterwards.

Kevin
Aaeye, no way round that one. If you have to replace the stub axle complete with sensor, see the guide for replicating the camber setting, and take some measurements prior to dismantling... IMO.
Should be able to get it cock on on re assembly.  :y

Shout if you need a hand.

I've got a few folks trying to sort out just a sensor .. with any luck one will be lucky !!! Also trying a few t'internet options .. I'd far sooner stick in a new sensor than change the whole hub .. :(

I've found a place .. in the States .. that might have one ... AC Delco part number and GM part numbers are the same as Vx part numbers ....and it lists it as a speed sensor for the catera ...  what do folks reckon the chances of it being the right one are ....   :(

Personally I'd be looking to just change the sensor... Have you tried some motor factors? Sure there must be a sensor in stock somewhere... I'll have a hunt for the place I've used in the past for good quality sensors

angle grind hub through to near sensor, and cut it out, that would be the way I would try given my previous attempt...

Been giving this some serious thought .. and have reached the following conclusions...

a)  Replacement used hub with ABS sensor pre-fitted :

Condition of sensor - unknown
Condition of bearing - unknown
6 hours to remove old and fit replacement
Full geometry required
Purchase of ball joint splitter required

Costs - £20 for hub, £80 for geometry = £100 + splitter + 6 hours work

b) Purchase used hub and angle grind the sensor out :

Condition of sensor - unknown
Condition of bearing - new
2 hours to cut out
1 hour to remove old senor and fit new

Costs - £20 for hub + 3 hours

c) Purchase new sensor from States if Andy C confirms it is correct, they have one, and they are willing to ship to UK

Condition of sensor - brand new
Condition of bearing - new
1 hour to smack out old sensor and fit new

Costs £70 including postage

I'm strongly coming down in favour of C then B .... anyone any other thoughts ???

:(

Thanks for that Joff .. but there's still the cost of the Alignement, the fuel to get there .. and the time/inconvenience...  methinks option A wil remain the last one ... :(

Considering the amount of grief you've had up to the moment Nige 'C' is the only way to go in my view.

Sometimes things can be fiddled about with too much.

get another hub with sensor fitted as you say condition unknown, however they rarely go wrong so fairly safe then get a bucket of diesel and drop the whole hub in it,after cleaning carefully round the sensor to remove any muck and dirt etc, every day gove the sensor a tweek to try and turn it a little!! a few days to a week  later the sensor will come out without damage

Problem may have been solved by that very nice Elite Pete chap.

He has just informed me he has succesfully removed one from a car he is breaking and having paypal'd him a suitable remuneration it should be on its way to me via the Mail Coach tomorrow.

Many thanks to all who have offered advice and ideas, much appreciated.

News will follow on Thursday (if its dry) as to my competence (or not) in fitting it without breaking anything else !!!!

OOF rules  :)

A few days ago I posted a link to a possible sensor from the states ... AndyC is not certain it is the right one, and Pete (and Daz) have managed to remove one from a hub for me ... so I don't need the USA one ... but have just recieved an email from them regarding supply ....

"Dear E,

Shipping this item to UK would be $88.25USD in addition to the
cost of the product. We currently only have one available. You may add $88.25 to the shipping charge in paypal. You MUST also provide a phone number in the notes section of the paypal payment. UPS requires a phone number for all international shipments.

-acdelco-parts-depot"

so $97 for the part $88 for delivery !!!!!! OUCH !!!!

Even more cause to thank Pete & Daz !!!!

Could always be a last resort if needed though.  :)
