Advice needed ... bit of a dilemma :(
« on: 02 April 2011, 12:53:44 »

As some will know ... I mullered the ABS sensor when changing the wheel bearing .. :(

I have now got a complete hub unit thingy with fitted sensor for £15 ... do I....

a) Try and remove the ABS sensor. I'm told that they break very easily.

b) Fit the whole hub thingy as is and keep the new hub/bearing I've just fitted as a "future spare"

c) Fit the hub thingy but then change the hub/bearing for the new one - making sure I DON'T damage the ABS sensor this time.

If a) .. any advice on how to remove without breaking it.

If b) or c) will it need geometry resetting as a large amount of things affecting the steering will have been disturbed.

I'm sorely tempted to try a) and if I do break it :( RobG tells me he has a replacement unit I can buy to then do b) or c).

There is also the possibility that Pete managed to get one out intact .. but not heard from him ...

decisions.. decisions ... :(

How much is a new sensor if you try A and things go wrong?
If it's expensive then B (if the bearing seems ok) or C

I am a coward so would try the easiest fix first and go from there....no point ending up doing all that work again imho

I would think that option B is the reasonable way forward (assuming that the bearing warrants it).

Should the bearing be suspect then you can replace it with the new one as you probably know what to look out for now.

Can't offer comment on changing the sensor as I've never done it but I would think that a geometry check (for the car) would be sensible given your tortuous experience.

Sorry Wrong RobG .. robg1984 has a spare "complete" unit ...

I think I'll attempt removal of the ABS sensor from this unit .. and if I screw it up .. I'll contact robg1984 and get the complete unit from him .. :)

Tried removing the sensor from the hub I bought .. failed miserably .. :(

Have had 2 sources offering replacement hub .. so hopefully will be able to do a hub change next weekend.

Jury is out on if a geometry check is required after this work ... a LOT of bolts and the ball joint have to be undone .. :(

EDIT ..

Found this link on t'internet ... anyone ever heard of them ?? Sent an email but don't expect an wanswer until late Monday at the earliest ..

You will have to have the geometry done.  The fact that your undoing the shock bolts will throw the camber out and chances are the toe angle will be affected aswell.

That was my thought, but others disagreed .. :(  really wish I could get just a sensor ... would save a lot of hassle and cost .. :(

Agreed. :y

It's the Mc'p strut to hub carrier bolts that set the camber, and they'll have to come off so it will certainly need setting up afterwards.
