Had my auto box checked here in Ireland by an Opel main dealer said it needed to be replaced. See my post "Defunct Auto Box". It was suggested on the post that it maybe the solenoids. So would be grateful if anyone knows how that can be done. The dealer read the box via Tec 11, however I'm not sure they are that used to seeing auto boxes here in Cork. A little unsophisticated over such technical matters. :-?

Having p0743 code on my2.2cd see my post Dillema for some usefull info. Been advised to renew solenoid 1st as it is the cheaper option.

Your dealer will have diagnosed fault but I was told by a mechanic his machine could not tell him if it was torqe converter or solenoid. So suggested doing the cheaper option and keeping my fingers crossed

Have you noticed your sport light flashing? or any dash lights? I checked out your other post and it seems like you still get some shifting. I'm stuck in a similar issue even after replacing the trans. Mine seems to be an electrical issue which I haven't been able to pinpoint. However mine goes into safe mode which doesn't shift from 3rd and you mention that your car does shift.

I thought tech2 could activate solenoids remotely to test? Might well be wrong though....?

In answer to the question of whether I have any dash or sport lights flashing the answer is no, however I am getting disco lights from the gear shift lights. They either all light up or none light up or the light comes on against a gear which is not engaged. Going to an Auto box specialist tomorrow (29.03.11)  to get the problem fixed. Will advise on the outcome (30/31.03.11) if anyone is sad enough to be interested ( apart from me).

Sorry boys 2 auto box specialist & 1 franchise dealer have checked it and they all say the same. It's not electrical but mechanical and the box is defunct. Will have to get a 2nd hand one.

Its up to you who,s opinion you decide to rely on, but  as Andy says - flashing lights at the selector panel inside the car suggest that the problem lies with the selector switch(on the n/s of the box) usually they just need a clean with contact cleaner or similar. Im sure there is a guide in here somwhere.
Got to be worth a try, as it will cost you almost nothing.
If the dealer doesnt realise that his tech2 can operate the solenoids remotely to test them, I wouldnt be taking much notice of what they say.

That may be... But I'd still pull the selector switch off and clean it as per the guide as it sounds like that's the problem

The auto boxes on these are pretty reliable unless having to cope with too much torque

That alone means the selector switch is knackered. A code reader capable of reading the TCM will show this as a Range Fault.

As the gearbox ecu (TCM) cannot be sure what is selected, it reverts to 3rd gear for forward motion.

Auto box specialist said the box was knackered. Its now in the state that if the engine is started and the  is not left running for a couple min before pulling the gear lever into 2nd gear to move off it shudders violently & will hardly move before after about a min it goes into 3rd & drives. This is a change from what it was doing if starting the engine & putting it into 2nd straight away, it went into 1st and would not change up for around 30 sec even if it was shifted manually into drive. See my latest post "Wife stranded & I'm hungry" if I remember correctly. I can't help but feel the box is goosed.

I'd still start with the selector switch cleaning as advised... It costs pretty much nothing to try it and all the symptoms, including the current "stranded wife", could be from that fault
