Poor accel after starting from hot 2.2petrol auto
« on: 11 April 2011, 13:45:38 »

2.2 Auto 2003 I've had it since almost new - now 115k miles. Its fly by wire and has no idle control valve
recently cleaned out all breathers and throttle body, new cam cover gasket, plugs, injector additive cleaner and replaced first lambda sensor.

Problem is erratic throttle response after starting from hot - virtually nothing , then pushing the throttle to the floor will pick things up. after 5-10 minutes no problems at all. No problems from starting cold and no starting problems.

Orange MIL sensor is on and comes back on if I reset it ( the one without the spanner). There are no error codes listed on my hand held OBDII. I do have a small exhaust manifold leak which seals when hot.

Any ideas on the hot restart issue and how to get the MIL light to stay OFF?

Odd that the light is on but the reader doesn't report any codes. I would try another code reader. If the light is on there must be something stored.

I would hazard a guess at something like the MAF sensor failing. In other words, the mixture is out until the closed loop lambda control is active whereby it gets corrected. Need to see what it's complaining about first, though.

thanks for the reply, I forgot to mention I was alarmed when I cleaned out the breathers and throttle body, the amount of oily gunk that was there. I did not think to clean the MAF , I hear its a bit delicate but keyboard foam can help?

My little reader certainlly shows other messages thats how I spotted the lambda sensor failed but it is el cheapo...

Tend not to like being cleaned, usually ends up knackered

I wouldn't recommend trying to clean the MAF. Very rarely does it help. The key at this stage is to get the fault codes out of it.

The other two aren't from a 2.2 or applicable :-/

thanks for that. I could not find the first 2 anywhere either so don't know where they came from.

Rich exhaust 0170
What might cause this - the lambda sensor i replaced ( its not an OEM one) or something else?

Well I'll have a look inside the MAF later today to see what state its in.
I've cleared all codes and will see what today brings.
I've a suspicion that the MIL light is coming on just when I start up, as an immediate clear leaves it off for 35 miles ( my distance to work). I stopped it and restarted when I got to work and the MIL light did not come on then, with the engine hot.
My other problem still remains of poor throttle response after hot start

You sure it was a right lambda sensor to replace?
Sounds to me like other lambda sensor or one other possibility is cam sensor.
Mine has similar simptoms.
When cold everything is ok, but when hot restarted couple of times it will turn the eml light on.
"My Naff Code Reader" reports a cam sensor (which is slowly going beserk).

Try one thing.
Restart it a copuple of times when hot.
Whebn the eml light comes on, drive a little, turn on then off (maybe needs a few attempts in a row).
If the light will go off after couple of times you have the same problem like mine and it is cam sensor.

Maybe some member which is close by with 2.2 can lend a sensor just to test it.

Hi thanks for the comments
well as sure as you can ever be, I have a L sensor to go in the 2nd location but can't get the old one out so not replaced it!
I deduced it was the first sensor - ok guessed, ( I did not have a reader at the time) and replaced it but could not clear the MIL light then as no reader
I then bought a cheap reader with reset. The first codes this spotted were sensor 1 which never reappeared after I cleared it so I may have guessed right and it related to the earlier sensor problem. I believe from what I have read on forums - the 2nd sensor does not control much and is for monitoring really. I assume it can also put on the MIL light but am not sure.
I have seen no codes from my reader referring to the second L sensor.

The cam sensor - now I've seen these cause a lot of trouble but I've a built in reluctance to buy things just to see particulary if its not bringing up any codes, but my trouble is I clearly have faults and no codes are coming up!

I'll try what you suggest with it hot and turn on /off to see if it clears

Hmm.  :-/

Well, P013x are lambda sensor codes although 134 is not listed for that ECU.

P0235... Again, not listed. Wasn't 335, I suppose (crank sensor)?

P0170.. That might be related to a MAF sensor failure. Indicates that the fuel trim has become excessive. It would be good to get some live data out of it if possible. Do you live near any of us who has a Tech 2?

Have inspected the MAF - it was pretty clean. Incidentally I noticed that the car runs fine at
tickover anyway with the MAF disconnected ( the spanner light comes on of course) is that Normal?.
After doing about 70 miles today I've collected a consist set of codes
0135
0030
These are the lambda sensor number 1 I think
and by itself 0170
This is the rich (or lean) code.

As I have to take it for an MOT soon, I'm going to get a Vauxhall Lambda sensor and replace the first sensor which is a cheap one
I've tried driving and turning off and restarting as suggested - but I don't get consistent results and the MIL light never goes off unless I reset it.
If I reset the MIL  while in motion there is a noticable glitch in the engine then it recovers itself - is that normal?

for me, despite what the codes say, suggestions cam sensor. Its about the only sensor on the 2.2 that fails....
