Think I may have made a mistake. Fitted an AR35 box to mums 2.5CDX using the 2.5 torque convertor. It seemed to fit very nicely. I did spill a little oil in the bell housing while fitting it.

There was no immediate leak but 4 day later a spot on the drive about 2 inches accross. Put that down to what may have been in the bellhousing. anyway no more leaks till today when a patch about 10 inches in diameter appears.

Has anyone any idea what I have done wrong please.

did you fit the g/box with the converter as a complete item or was the converter left on the engine,if the latter its really easy to damage the seals when trying to fit the box

TC was removed with auto box. box was then stood on end and carefully lifted TC off.
Putting TC back on I was careful but it did no sit down properly until I rotated it and it the dropped about 1/2 an inch to sit properly.

I assume I am going to have to take it all out again, ho hum such is life.

Sounds like you followed the correct procedure but it's always possible that the gearbox wasn't removed from the previous car with as much care. 

The oil seal at the front of the gearbox can be changed easily enough. While you're there I would check for scoring on the torque converter nose and see if you can look into the gearbox and see damage on the bush that this locates into though.

Thanks Kevin. It was purchased off the forum from someone whom I believe to be very trustworthy and don't believe he would have removed it incorrectly.

It might just need a new seal,  if it was mine i would have fitted a new seal before fitting but that is just me being super safe. But it does sound the the box will have to come out again.

I assume the leak is from inside the bellhousing?

Not actually been under for a close examination but looking from the side and front it seems to be around the bellhousing area, and front autobox sump. but that could just be blown back in the wind.

At least it is a fairly simple job to take it out again.

Worth a check for the easy things first.. Cooler pipes leaking? Breather pipe come loose or dropped down from behind the engine? Sump gaskets? Another seal on the auto box leaking, etc...

Is it easy enough to remove?

Yes it is. took me 4 hours to change box with 70 year old passing me spanners etc and 17 year old being shown what to do, and using his young muscles to undo some of the stubborn bolts. And that was on 4 car ramps.

I will add that tme did not nclude a flud change. The idea being to run it as is for a couple of weeks to check it was ok then do a flud change. I am somewhat glad that is what we decided on, as to see ne flud all over the ground would be somewhat disheartening.
