Rear springs
« on: 04 May 2011, 13:49:40 »

Hi all. My Elite just failed its test on broken n/s/r coil spring. I was under there a few weeks back and all seemed ok! I'm just going to check again in a few mins.

Anyway, where is the best place to get decent new springs? Dealers? I have a trade card.

Could I get firmer ones/MV6 springs and fit them whilst retaining self levelling? Or would this cause issues?

Thanks all.

Fit standard springs with no ill effect or use KYB for self-levellers.

I ordered a set from Buypartsby about 8 weeks ago.

Including delivery they were around £85 and delivery was within 2 days.

To be safe I contacted them by phone and did the deal that way.

Thanks peeps! I've ordered some of the KYB springs from local supplier, they're coming in tomorrow so will pick them up after 2. Not as cheap as £85, these are £108, oh well you win some you lose some!

Daft Q - I will need spring compressors right? The very helpful guide from MDTM doesn't mention them, but I take it that's because it's obvious and I'm being a gimp?

How long will it take if I start at 3? Will I be tucked up in bed with by 9 o'clock with my bombardier (beer that is)? - I've never changed springs before.

Thanks :y

Spring compressors not usually required (not really room anyway)...

...that said, I've failed twice to replace springs on MV6 - but I think that is the new rear bushes not allowing sufficient flex...

When I replaced mine I found that with the diff lowered and supported on jack I couldn,t get the old springs out.

Found it best to fit a compressor on eacn side of the spring and just wind it up a bit..that then allowed the spring to come out nicely and replaced the new ones in the same way.The guide does say no spring compressor but I couldnt see how they would come out otherwise. In truth I hadn,t disconnected the exhaust hanger rubbers so that may have helped but ,spring squeezers did the job a treat.

From memory it took about 1 hour per side, but I tend to go slowly and methodically when doing jobs for the first time.Best of luck..it is a straight forward task.

Just changed mine a couple of weeks ago , as Amba says,  should only take a couple of hours.  Would advise you to do the offside first. just follow the guide on here, you may need someone to just push down with their foot on the rear hub assembly for the final bit of clearance to get springs in & out.

You may have to release the rear exhaust rubbers to get nearside out & back in. But you should not need spring compressors.

Good luck -  :y :y :y :y
