Broken part in 2.5td anyone tell me what it does
« on: 15 May 2011, 22:48:07 »

This part is broke in my car.
There is no numbers on it to look it up and there is no words on it.
Can anyone tell me what it is and what it does.
It has a big red dot on it in the photo.

Thanks

MAP sensor - it tells the ECU how much air is going into the engine (well, actually it tells the ECU what the air pressure is in the inlet manifold).

It's .. quite important!

In traditional terms, its the boost sensor.  Most cars would drag on EML, but that being BMW, that would harm their perceived higher reliability ;)

Yes, its importnat, and yes, it will cause the engine to run sub optimally

The pipe going into the map sensor is blowing out a bit of oil.
Is this normal? Will in clog the sensor?

Yes, its the blow by gases escaping by the easiest route e.g.....the borken pipe.

The blow by gases will have some oil content.

The sensor has no through passage so when connected correctly no harm will be done.

I guess the turbo seals, given some miles, may generate a samll amount of oil in the intake as well...

Possibly but not so likely on TD's as they have a much easier life than turbos on petrols

Funny you should say that - there's a 2.5TD on fleabay at the moment listed with a 'blown turbo' .. I have my doubts a about that and I'm almost tempted to take a punt on it for precisely the reason you say.

Bejeezus! Did you buy it already? If not, I have a used as-far-as-I-know-good one sitting in the toolbox that you're welcome to for the price of postage and a wee bit to cover a couple of drinks? (Took it off my old 2.5TD when I was playing find-the-fault-that-turned-out-to-be-the-autobox ;D, it wasn't throwing any codes so I believe it to be a good sensor; they're electrically very reliable)

Given the entire state of the intakes on these TDs, I would hazard a guess that the majority of the oil in the TD intake has come from the turbo - would have thought if it was just blow by, is would hit a brick wall long before the turbo, but the oil starts just beynd air filter normally...

I think I got cheesed off with TD parts cluttering my garage, so sent it all to landfill :(
