Gearbox Oil
« on: 19 May 2011, 14:55:07 »

Just wondering how much old oil could be removed from the autobox by using a syringe and pipe method and then replacing back to level with new fluid.

As it seems you can only replace approx 50% by getting dirty and dropping both sumps, wondered if a couple of litre bottles each week using this method would "freshen " things up in the gearbox without getting too involved.

Oh and forgot to say I first of all bought a Draper oil extraction syringe,A total messy disaster! You will also need a B&Q gardening pressure spray to get the new fluid in.

If you could drain the rear sump with an extractor, I guess it's just the fluid in the front sump. IIRC, there's a bit of valve body that protrudes into that sump so it's probably not holding a lot of fluid, and the fluid that's in there is in a  "dead end" anyway. :-/

Downside is that you won't get early warning of a thrust washer failure and can't clean the magnet and filter. Might be Ok for every other change, though.  :-/

Another possibility is to suck out and refill the back sump then flush the remaining fluid out by removing the cooler return hose to drain old fluid out while keeping the level topped up to the drain plug with a killaspray, etc. until the draining fluid runs clear.

Never tried any of the above, but for those inclined to experiment. ;)

Then again, could just fit drain plugs to the two sumps. :y
