Crack before catalyst on 2.0 16v
« on: 20 May 2011, 19:06:56 »

Took my car to get a new tyre and alignment done today, and the mechanic guy called me over to look underneath the car to show me how much misaligned it was, then he also pointed out that the exhaust had kinda split before where the catalyst is.
I later got quoted £150 for the whole job which would include the section from the manifold.
Getting in the car afterwards I noticed the exhaust note was a lot noisier than when I drove in, so I went back to get an explanation as to how it only started sounding like that after being in their hands. They said it coulda gone any time as it was cracking over time. Hmmm.
Does the quote and work sound right?

Was this a national chain or an independent? :-X ::)

Price sounds reasonable if it's supplying a new down pipe and cat but I'd be cautious :-/ :-/

Price not too bad if the cat/downpipe has been replaced.  I'm not at all surprised that it's louder though.
Cheap pattern cats tend to be much smaller than the original, and much noisier.  Shame you didn't get the original repaired/welded really.  I made the same mistake recently, with a whole (super cheap) system.  Sounds like its leaking now, it's so loud, except it isn't, it's just a cheap, nasty, thin POS.

Luckily it's the missus's car so I don't have to hear it much.  ;D
