12n trailer electrics
« on: 21 May 2011, 23:16:13 »

Hello peeps, I have just taken the towbar off the mv6 ready to put on the elite. i cut the socket wires as the screws holding the socket on the towbar were seized, and it's never going back on the mv6 anyway.

The colours of the wires are:

black/red
grey/red
black/white
black
brown/white
black/grey
black/green
grey

This is obviously different to the normal colour wires. Does anyine have any ideas what they are?

Thanks

Too many wires there... It's only 7 pin :-/

TBH, for the cost I'd just stick a new socket and wires on ;) ;)

Yeah that's what I thought, there's definitely 8 though. Could I take a spur from all the lights in the same way people do for the brake lights?

Oh, hang on a minute... Are those colours quoted from the wire from the socket or from the pre-wired loom in the boot of the car?

It might cause issues with the lamp failure circuits though :-/ :-/

I used a 7 way smart bypass relay, took all the feeds from the pre-wired socket except for the stop lamps which I took from the loom running up to the O/S Cluster :y

The "extra" wire could well be the link that turns OFF the rear fogs when the socket is connected, but allows them to work if the socket is unplugged. It goes through a small spring loaded contact in the 12N socket by pin 2 ... long time since I played with a 12N/12S so that is from memory !!

The colours are from the socket on the towbar. Why do I need a bypass relay if I wire into the plug?

Ah yes... Good point! Although my 12N pre wired socket from andyc is only 7 core. I've not worried about the fog light cut out as I've never worried about it in the past ;)

You may or may not... I've fitted one to be safe as they're not stupidly expensive ;)

Are the wire going to the plug in the boot trim the same colour as the 7 core for 12n? Therefore making it easy for someone like me who knows nothing about electrics to wire it up. I don't even know what a bypass relay is for or what it does, hahaha

I wired mine up just linking into the loom by the plug in the boot. The only extra I have is the warning buzzer that activates with the indicators. Don't forget the 7 pin plug doesn't allow for reversing lights and the side lights are split between two pins.
I used the same info as you have linked in you message.
My car is a '98 so I don't know if age is an issue to ammended wiring in newer cars.....

Can you cut open the old socket to see what wires were connected where?
