Leak, but from where ?
« on: 22 May 2011, 17:29:48 »

Took the inlet workings off to try to find where the coolant leak is coming from. There nis a lot of congealed gunk around the area at the front of the cooler plate, which is also the same area as the thermostat housing.
I have taken a few pics but photobucket seems to be playing silly burgers again, so cant upload them at the minute.
My gut feeling is the cooler plate as there is some discolouration on the top of it - from the front banjo bolt forwards. This sits higher than the stat housing, so it seems likely that its coming from there and running down into the area around the stat.
Do they ever leak from around the stat ? or just the cooler plate/ coolant bridge ?
Any experiencede advice appreciated, as I dont want to pull more things apart than I need to, and I really need the car on the road asap. :y

Dont think its the bridge. Most of the mess is at the front, but its hard to tell if its from the plate or the stat housing. Thats why I was curious if they normally leak from there or just the plate or bridge ?

Cover plate normally, but don`t discount the stat housing :(

I suppose I have 3 choices....
1. reseal the plate and put it all back together and find out if it still leaks.
2. reseal the plate and put a new stat on at the same time.

3. Burn it.

 :D ;D ;D

Not knowing much about the 6-potter, apart from stripping it :D can`t you re-seal the plate then pressurise it or is there a "curing" time for the sealant

If you decide on renewing the stat, have you got a spare transfer pipe handy ::)

Overnight I believe. I will be lucky to get as far as resealing it this evening anyway, but I dont have the means to pressurise it. I will have a root arounf in the shed, see if I can cobble something up from an old header tank cap. ;)

Too late. Ive started putting it back together, and really cant be aresed with faffing about with the stat tbh. Need the car tomorrow afternoon and have a very long to do list.
The cooler plate, on the right of the pics, sits about an inch higher than the stat, so Im reasonably sure it was coming from there and running down onto the stat. :y
