Dropping the fuel tank?
« on: 23 May 2011, 17:32:14 »

Something I need to look at (probably can't afford to facilitate a repair right now though), is a leak when the tank is full.  i.e. if I fill the tank right up it leaks over the top and down the back of the tank when pumping fuel in, stops if you stop putting fuel in.  Don't seem to get any leak on actual filling, just when it gets full.

So, with that in mind I probably need to drop the tank at some point to investigate the cause of the problem.  This is something I have never done before so just wondering how easy a job it is, bearing in mind I will be working on axle stands as don't have access to a ramp.  Obviously, ideally needs to be done with tank as empty as possible due to weight :)

Have you checked the pump/sender unit seal. Much easer than dropping the tank and is the most probable cause. Inspection cover is under boot carpet undo the 4 screws remove cover and you'll be able to see. Check the unit is located correctly and the locking ring is tight.

Had a quick look after I found out about the problem, wasn't really sure what I was looking for in the way of problems so didn't really help haha.  I seem to recall seeing some guide on here about it looked through the guide index thread but couldn't seem to identify the one I was after.

Lift up the boot carpet and just behind the rear seats (slightly to the right of centre) you will see a metal cover with 4 screws in it.

Remove this cover and check the state of the plate on the top of the tank which you will now be able to see.

Having had a look at it with the cover plate removed (not actually taken anything else off) there is no sign at all of there ever being any leaks in that area.  Its generally dirty and the dirt is undisturbed, I would espect to see cleared trails if fuel had leaked out at this point, correct?

Or do I actually need to dismantle further for to fully investigate.

OK, cover plate removed.

The rubber seal below the cover plate wasn't in place properly, not sure if that was because the cover plate rotated a bit while trying to undo the securing ring.

However, if that seal was the cause surely I would of seen signs of fuel leaks before even removing the cover plate?

Will re-seat the seal (looks to be in good condition, cant see any splits or cracks etc.

EDIT: Having reseated the seal, I don't think it was in place correctly before.  When I removed it the cover plate rotated fairly easily when I was undoing the securing ring, however on putting it back together it didn't move at all even though I did the securing ring up tighter (it easily came undone by hand when removing).

Have to see how it goes next time I fill up!
