Fans constantly running.
« on: 31 May 2011, 20:21:56 »

When I start the engine on my 53 plate MV6 both the fans come on and stay on.
The result is that I can't get the temperature gauge to leave it's stop. The car runs fine.......but very cold. Any ideas please?.

Sounds like one or more of the relays may be at fault,  K26, K52 and K28 in the engine bay fuse box. You can try pulling them see if that cures it. The layout of these relays. http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1176560725

Think it`s just trial & error. You may be able to separate the relay body to check for any tracking/burn marks/melted connections :-/

I would try pulling the plug on the thermoswitch just below the top radiator hose. If the fans stop, that's your problem.

Otherwise, relays possibly, as said. Let us know if the above stops the fans and we can diagnose further.

With the A/C running they will operate constantly, as said.

Presumably they stop if the ignition is switched off?

Do you know if they are running at slow speed or full speed?

However, the fans can blow all they like and it won't make a scrap of difference to the engine temperature. This should be regulated by the thermostat, and if the gauge is not moving I would say the thermostat is donald.

Try starting from cold and feeling the top radiator hose as it warms up. It should stay cool until the engine reaches normal operating temperature, then suddenly become quite hot.

If it warms up gradually with the engine, it's a sign that the thermostat has failed.

1.Thanks.... I'll check this out Kevin.
2.Yes they do.
3.Temperature usually (previously) reached about ninety degrees centigrade before the fans cut in.  .
4. Why is the thermostat so inaccessible?. It should be a five minute job to change it......but it is buried deep between the creamy bosoms of the lusty V6..... ;) :D :D.
