Almost cutting out !!
« on: 30 May 2011, 19:06:15 »

Hi Guys.
The mig has developed a problem that I'm hoping you can help me with.

This afternoon when I first pulled away from outside my house it sounded like the engine was going to cut out but did'nt.
After I started the engine I was playing around with the stereo for about five minutes and while the car was idling for that time it sounded fine......ticking over lovely.
It was only when I put the car in drive and started pulling away from the kerb that the tickover started to sound a bit splutery   :( :(

As I then drove up the road it was fine and I had no further problems for the rest of my ten minute journey.
It held first gear longer then normal for the first couple of gear changes but i'm led to believe thats normal for migs.

Anyway a couple of hours later I started my journey home and the car started fine.

It was only about 3 minutes into my return journey that I was stationary at some traffic lights and the tickover got splutery again.
The rev counter was dropping below 500 and then back up towards 1000.
Just pinging up and down slowly.

I then pulled away from the lights and turned right and it felt like the engine was going to cut out.
I was pressing the accelerator but the car was not responding.

It was still moving along but not at the speed that it should have been.......this lasted for about 10 seconds before back to normal again.

I thought the bloody thing was going to come to a stop right in the middle of a Red Route  ::) ::) ::)

Some more info to help you guys with is that at no time did any warning lights come on the dash.
Not when I first turned the key , while I was driving....not at any time at all.

At the end of March I serviced the car and I did the following bits.

NEW SPARK PLUGS
NEW POLLEN FILTER AND AIR FILTER.
FULL OIL AND FILTER CHANGE.
COOLANT SYSTEM FLUSHED AND CHANGED
3 NEW BREATHER TUBES
SUMP PIPE REMOVED AND CLEANED AND GASKET REPLACED.
THROTTLE BODY REMOVED AND COMPLETELY CLEANED OUT.
NEW THROTTLE BODY GASKET
BRAND NEW BATTERY

I did all this after changing my cam cover gasket and cam cover o rings due to them leaking.
No leaks since so I know i did a good job on that.

The car was quite low on fuel but still had around 30 -35 miles left.
When I was leaving my house the light was on and it was showing as having 23 miles left so I stopped off on my ten minute journey and put a fiver in, so it could'nt have almost cut out at the lights on the way home due to low fuel.....or could it??

( I get paid monthly....It's a bitch!! :P :P )

Sorry for going on but I know that the more info I give the more likely somebody is to work out what's wrong.

Help....please... :-* :-* :-*

as you changed these was this the first time the car was struggling to idle right, or its been on and off since the service, reason im saying, iv noticed same sort of problem which was caused by the hose not being secured to the airbox when i changed my air filter. But after tightening that resolved the coughing issue!

might be worth a check round the engine and all related to breathing/idling are nice nd tight as should be.
Someone more experienced might come along and be able to put their finger on whats actually might be causing it.

Goodluck buddy!  :y

Hi mate.

Yes this is the first time that It's happened since the service but I'm pretty sure that I tightened everything up properly.

Now that you've mentioned it though I will double check just to be sure  :y

First off, remove the ecostrip and check for water/oil in the plug wells.

I would agree with that.

I had similar symptoms on my Desmond and found water in No 4 plug well - this dripped off the underside of the rain deflector on the underside of the scuttle.

Just removed the coil pack and checked the plug wells and they were bone dry  :-/

Stallion mate the reason why I changed the battery is simpley because it was slowley on the way out.
It just decided to give up the ghost at the same time I was doing the service.

Any other tips guys......does seem strange it only happened when it was raining like it was on my return journey.

And the day before this happened I washed the car....don't know if there is anything in that or not :-/ :-/

If you can get access to a code reader its well worthwhile Fudgee - it may just point you in the general direction.

Although in the absence of water, oil or oxidised material on the rubber boots of the coil pack, a misfire or a management or emissions light it may well point towards an air leak or incomplete electrical connection - especially as you've had the throttle body off.

Cheers Den.

It was about 6 weeks ago that I had the throttle body off, and yet yesterday was the first time it happened so i'm assuming that i've done everything back up properley.

Will double check to make sure though.

I've just been looking on e-gay and there are some cheap code readers compatible with my car for around the £40 mark so when I get paid i'll probabley get one.

The 1 that I'm looking at plugs straight into your laptop and looks straight forward enough......( Famous last words!! )

In the meantime i'll check all hoses for tears but I'm pretty sure that there all alright.

Will update as I go along  :-/

I was wondering if anybody knew the location of the IACV on a 2.2 facelift.

The guide supplied by Guffer is excellent but is from a 2.0L and the layout is slightly different.

The good news is that I followed the instructions on the guide, and removed my small breather from the cam cover and started the engine to check for suction.
My finger was stuck to the breather so I know that the Jet is not blocked.

I just need to find the IACV so I can clean it out but i'm not sure what i'm looking at. :-/ :-/

I took this photo and have arrowed 2 bits which I was thinking could be the valve.......just need to know if 1 of them is and if not where is it?

Cheers guys...sorry about the size of the pic....could'nt work out how to resize it ::)
