Just removed the coil pack and checked the plug wells and they were bone dry  :-/

Stallion mate the reason why I changed the battery is simpley because it was slowley on the way out.
It just decided to give up the ghost at the same time I was doing the service.

Any other tips guys......does seem strange it only happened when it was raining like it was on my return journey.

And the day before this happened I washed the car....don't know if there is anything in that or not :-/
:-/

Feel under the centre of the scuttle - is it wet or damp?

If it is, then water could be dripping onto the coil pack connections at the back of the engine.

I think you may have been on to something there mate.
Any dampness would have dried out by the time I checked, but i was inspecting the scuttle drain and I pushed the passenger side part and it moved upwards about half an inch.

I was messing around with it when I was changing the pollen filter and obviousley did'nt leave everything as I found it.
Just took it out in the rain for a ten minute spin and it idled perfect.
Checked under the skuttle B4 I drove off as the car had been out in the rain for a couple of hours and could'nt find any water anywhere.

I don't see how it could have been getting onto the wires from that part of the skuttle but It's the only thing I adjusted and the problem has now stopped touch wood, so it must have been that :-/

The part I pushed further upwards was literally right in the corner underneath the tax disc.

Thanks for all of your replys and advice guy's and hopefully you won't need to give me any more on this matter :y

For future reference, the 2.2 doesn't have an IACV so you can relax about that being the trouble.  The electronic throttle takes care of idle air supply AFAIK.
