Was just trundling home last night, when my 1999 2.5 V6 auto/petrol began to lose power, pulled over and got out, the heat and the stink from under the car was REALLY BAD, and the engine was running really lumpy, definately not running on all cylinders, NO WARNING lights came up on the dash....any ideas? If the cats are blocked do I need the metal ones £108+vat or the ceramic type £47+vat?

when was your last cambelt changed
i got a similar experiance when my cambelt was changed lasat time but it was a touch out hence causing the misfire and the unusual hot smell

car has only done 52k from new, so the cambelt is due a change......and the stench is of rotten eggs.

I would try a paperclip test http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687. If no fault codes are reported I would say you probably have an ignition related misfire.
If this is the case, check the plug wells for oil, the condition of the plugs and leads and, if nothing conclusive there, the coil pack.

did paperclip test.....12 12 12 then a 9?
                                                 33 exhaust voltage?
                                                 31 no rpm cos the engine wasn't running.

the plug that I took off does have a little oil in it, not much though, depends on ones definition of not much lol

You are looking for evidence of oil leaking into the area around the spark plugs, such that the top of the plug and the lead that connects to it are sitting in oil. This soon leads to the HT circuit to the spark plug being contaminated resulting in a misfire.

I'd pull all the spark plugs and check for oil, and also look at the condition of the plug itself, and the lead that feeds it.

Of the 3 plugs my limited DIY skills allow me to get to, none seem to have any ingress of oil, on the lead or plugs, I can only assume we are back to coil pack, lead or plug failure.......which as I had them ALL replaced just over a year ago....I'm not impressed at!

The heat from under the car could be unburnt fuel travelling to the hot cats and igniting, due to the misfire. There was a member on here whose cats were glowing red hot after a motorway run because of this iirc
