2.2 Last Chance Saloon
« on: 06 June 2011, 22:31:52 »

Hi
Sorry this is long winded but having already spent a grand on my Omega so far this year only to now be told it needs a new ECU, I thought I'd list what's gone on in case anybody has experienced the similar and it's not the ECU.

Rough idling for around 3 months. Got really bad about a month ago with car revving by itself before spluttering to a stall. Local garage diagnosed leaking manifold. Day before I was taking it in , I went to start her up but battery was dead. Had sat idle for 3 weeks. Jump started her but had no throttle whatsoever. AA man had to follow me to the garage at 5mph on the pull of the auto alone. Garage fitted new manifold, new throttle potentiometer but brought up the following list of codes:-
P0170 - 02 SENSOR
P1700 - MIL REQUES FROM TRANSMISSION MODULE
P1120 - ACCEL PEDAL SENSOR 1
P1122 - ACCEL PEDAL SENSOR 2
P1150 - LIMP HOME
P1525 LIMP HOME POSS ERROR
P0304 - CYLINDER 4 MISFIRE
P0120 - THROTTLE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH A CIRCUIT.

The garage suggested I get it into a VX dealer for their Tech 2 to diagnose. This I did. Their report is as follows:-
INVESTIGATED EML ON/ROUGH IDLE
TECH 2 TESTED, FOUND PRESENT CODES - P1700 SVS
REQUEST VIA CAN AND P0304 CYLINDER 4 MISFIRE DETECTED
CHECKED DATALIST
CARRIED OUT COMPRESSION TEST (ALL CYLIINDERS 180 PSI)
ACTUATOR TESTED, COIL PACK
CHECKED FOR AIR LEAKS. FOUND LEAK FROM INTAKE MANIFOLD, REQUIRES NEW GASKET.
RAN THROUGH CHECKING PROCEDURES FOR CODE 1700. CHECKS GO STRAIGHT TO REPLACEMENT OF ENGINE ECU REQUIRED.
SUGGEST REPLACE MANIFOLD GASKET AND GO FROM THERE
VHC 0.3

I had the intake manifold gasket replaced today, only to be told there wasn't a problem with the old one. Undriveable still and now the total loss of throttle response has returned with the car holding itself at over 1200 rpm after starting.

EGR valve was blanked off a few weeks back to see if that helped but didn't. Brand new plugs. Thoroughly cleaned throttle body and breather pipes and new throttle body gasket fitted.

I just can't afford to replace the ECU at the £800 quoted so I'm asking if anybody has any idea if there can be anything causing all this other than the ECU.

Thanks for any help.

First things first mate I would not be buying brand new parts at stupid prices there are a few people on here that break cars with far cheaper parts :y

Do you know if the after the first EML code check they cleared the codes?

I would not trust these garages as far as I could throw them  :(

Do you live near Kev Wood? He knows how to use a Tech 2 properly :y

I reckon you should start a fresh with someone who has a clue then go from there :y

The bulk of the money has gone on wear and tear items up to this issue. New cambelt and water pump, rear shocks and coil springs and new front discs and pads, cam cover gasket, exhaust bits. Hence my reluctance to part with a really well looked after car for scrap. I don't know anybody in Kent with a TECH2 I'm afraid, outside of a VX garage.

According to his profile, he's in Alton, Hampshire. Sadly that's about 75 miles from me but thanks anyway.

Forgot to mention I bought a new EGR valve from Vauxhall Car Parts in January. In April it failed so they replaced it. The garage told me the new one also is faulty as it's blowing from the body. Turns out they're not genuine vauxhall parts. As I have blanked it off anyway, would that have anything to do with it. If it's a non vauxhall part, will the electrical side of it be a decent match. Plus, do they affect the cars running from cold as I think I read they only start to work when the engine is hot. Clutching at straws I know as it won't have anything to do with me not having a throttle but just wondered if it might be contributing.

I use a local Auto Electrician, cheaper than Vx and they have always resolved my problems over the years, usually a cam or crank sensor for running problems, over 3 cars and all 4 pots.... :y

How does plug no 4 look?
Which manifold was replaced? Intake or exhaust?
Which gasket was replaced? Intake or exhaust?
Had the codes been cleared to see what came back?
Have all electrical connections at both the throttle pot and the accelerator connection been checked and reseated?

All the plugs are ok. Both manifold gaskets replaced along with a new exhaust manifold. Yes the codes were cleared and the first list was what came back. VX also cleared the codes. Car and spanner symbol came back after I got about 50 yds up the road.
DLK - if you have the time to call, that'd be great.
