V6 Aux belt too small?
« on: 06 June 2011, 17:50:41 »

I've ogt a Aux belt from a motor factors and then direct from Vauxhall, but both are too short. Vauxhall say there is only one for A/C cars but it definately won't fit. I've checked routing and the tensioner seems OK.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Graham.

Ribbed V belt lengths are 1900mm without aircon and 2260mm with aircon for the V6

Rob,

Where did you get that size for the car with A/c from.

The motor factors and vauxhall supplied me with a 2020mm belt? Vaux say there is only one size.
Where would you order the size you mention?

Regards,

Graham.

Last one from dealer worked for me.  I'd check with dealer about any mistakes...

The dealer is polite but disinterested. I have checked routing (3 sources) doubled checked the tensioner parts are still assemled correctly and measured the belts 2020mm. The dealer suggested I call the trade club helpline and after listening to their message (around 60p's worth of not me guv) I left a message that has not been returned.
Why o why did I throw that old belt away!!

Just tried a string mock up at 2260 and that is much too big. I guess earlier cars with an extra bottom pulley needed that one. 2020 is still too tight however. Could I have a non standard pulley or tensioner somewhere? It all looks right.

Hi Albs,

Yeah, I've been using the water pump pulley last. that's the only one without a lip.

I only need another inch or so (can't believe I just posted that)

Tensioner seems OK.

I did take it back off to see that the tabs were in the right place (these are the casting tabs that limit the pivot range) The tensioner seems to rotate smoothly but with some force around 70 degrees and than stops hard against the stop.

I only found out mine was seized after the a/c compressor stopped working and my belt made an awful noise.I then decided to fit the shorter belt until I get the a/c sorted.
Yours sound ok though  :y

I’ve just replaced the aux belt on my 2001 2.6 +aircon, which sounds the same as yours, using Vx part 93181720.  It is also shown on the invoice as V0093181721/B, whatever that may mean – superseded number perhaps?  It is the one listed for my reg and fits perfectly.

I have just checked the old one (Gates) and it is marked 2020 and also measures 2020mm.

The routing is as shown on the OOF cambelt DVD: under the crankshaft pulley, under the aircon, over the power steering, horizontally straight across the top and over the tensioner, under the alternator and finally looping up over the water pump ribbed side out.

Hi Osprey,

Just checked my belt ref and no. and it has the same part no. as yours, ie 93181720. The belt is a 2020mm.
Did you find that the belt slipped on to the water pump pulley OK providing the tensioner was fully eased off?
Do I have to lever it over with a 3 foot screwdriver? I assume not.
Something is not right- just not sure what at present.

Thanks for your help.

Graham.

15mm spanner/socket and ratchet on the tensioner nut and turn all the way to the stop... ISTR that the tensioner has to be pretty much at full stretch.
