Got a noise.
« on: 09 May 2011, 19:51:12 »

I hate described noises on here, but here goes.

It's coming from behind the glove box so could be anything forward of there. Definitely left side of car. Sounds like a whistle/gargle/burble. Like spinning a match box car wheel that part spins freely and smooth with intermitant buzz if it oscillates. I can't decide if it's air or a baring noise.

Car runs fine, no multi ram problems. Theres no air leaks from the vac pipes ESP by ac pipe. Pipes to vac tank by scuttle are fine. Cam belt has 20k left on it although I'm not sure on time, think end of year iirc according history. I suppose the cam belt cover could be rubbing.

Although having said all that a member here says his does the same. It's just the buzz from the cam wheels. Thing is I've never heard it before on another omega, only this one.

Thoughts please.

Check the cam belt is one, but I'm happy to let it run it's life as it's well documented in the history.

Might be the engine ECU cooling fan tucked up inside the passenger wing where it meets the door

Does it stop when:

1) You turn the blower off
2) You turn the aircon off

Sure the whine is from IN FRONT of the glovebox, above the passenger seat, and only present when racing Range Rovers around the M25 ::)

Have to turn cc off to hear it properly so not cc related. It's in time with rpm. Loudest, although quiet, between 1 and 2k rpm and sort of gargles out to barely audible by about 3krpm and repeats the same between each gear change.... If it was a fraction higher pitched it could be speaker wine/feedback or whatever it's called. I dont think it's that, just trying to give an idea.

Cc and radio off, windows up to hear it. Although it can be heard over low volume enough to make you think" theres that rather noise again"... And turn everything off for a better listen. It' not intermitant by the way, it's there as the revs rise between each change. Temp makes no odds afaict.

Or as someone else said, the ecu cooler fan?

Mmm did have the scuttle off and have a look about. Main vac hose is fine, still had the clip to hold it away from the ac pipe. All small pipes connected. It's always done it since we picked it up. Had the plenum off for cam cover seals and plugs and re seated it carefully. Not made any odds to the noise. All plugs same colour, all inlets same colour so no sign of air leaks from inlet manifold etc, although that's all got to come off again to do the LPG.

Where's the ecu cooling fan? Under the fuse box? Would that run with engine revs?  :-/

I had exactly as you describe a few weeks back and put it down to a noisy air vent or even debris in a small fan.Now I know about a fan on the ecu I think that could be spot on.I haven't noticed it recently but I'll listen to see if it's gone If it's still there will let you know :y

Passenger wheel arch off you will see the airpipe that goes to the ECU housing, where the wing meets the door you`ll see some black "foamlike" padding, fan lives behind that. As a quick check you can just unplug it and see if the noise disappears
