need a new (second) key for my mig.
« on: 16 June 2011, 12:26:55 »

My MV6 only came with the one key...

The battery holder has just snapped off the PCB, so remote locking doesn't work.

I've ordered a code card or whatever it's called from the stealers...

What else do I need?

It's the two(three) piece key where the blade is attached to a horseshoe shaped bit of plastic, and the key has two buttons.

I'm assuming keyblade which needs cutting.
Then the Fob side will need (re)programming? (tech2?)

is that it?

Obviously I can't send my only key off to be fixed until I have a second key to use.

Talk to Martin Imber on here. He'll probably be able to repair your old remote.

If you want a replacement they need to be exactly the same type for compatibility, and there are at least 3 kinds fitted to Omegas.

For this reason, buying them from Ebay can be a lottery unless you know exactly what you're getting. They are not that expensive from the main dealers normally.

That's the plan - but I need a second key so I can use the car whilst it's being fixed  :(

just been quoted "a couple of hundred quid" - including tech2 programming  >:(

I read an article/website somewhere that described all of the different sorts of keys, and I'm pretty confident that I can source the correct bits.
It was the chip inside the key that worries me - whether or not it's a special order purpose made jobbie which is burned with and ECU specific code.
Or does the fob side come with the code, and you program the car ECU to accept it?

You can buy a blank key with blank chip off ebay for about a tenner...key cutting is minimal...if all else fails once you have the car pass come over and I can code up the key and fob for you for MUCH MUCH less :y And I can also sort out your broken fob too...

You need a Tech 2 to pair the fob with the car, and to program the immobiliser to accept the chip in the key (2 separate systems). You don't want the dealer to do that bit, as they will charge through the nose. "a couple of hundred quid" is simply extortionate.  See the link in my signature for the alternative. ;)

The fob alone is only 30/40 quid IIRC. Blank keys with the transponder chip in are also quite cheap. Andyc on here will probably be able to advise on the cost and type required for your car.
