Lowering an Elite Estate
« on: 19 June 2011, 08:33:53 »

Morning all,

Not being a mechanic, I have no idea.

What do you have to change to lower the car, is it the springs?
I don't want it mega low, just a fraction. I have to be careful as I tow a 'van too.

TIA  :y

Yep, springs. I would think MV6 springs would be the way to go for lowering sensibly, but others may know better. :y

Cheers Albs.

If thats the case rather than change the springs, could you just cut a fraction off the length of the current spring?

Or is that just downright stupid?  ::)

I would ask what are you wanting to do with the car?
If you carry alot of weight in the boot then speed humps will be a problem even a steep drive. If your towing a caravan you may find the jockey wheel bottoming out too.
The plus side though when empty it corners with no wallowing.

As you have an Elite the self leveling can work in your favor.

Fit what ever springs/suspension you want, but mv6 lowered sports chassis sound ideal for you giving 15mill drop, and retain self leveling rear shocks. Then tweak the level sensor arm if needed to give the hight you want at the back, although ime it seems to calibrate itself to a point.  :-/

Only trouble with this is self leveling shocks aren't the best when it comes to damping quality, but then if towing I wouldn't be without them.

I don't usually carry anything majorly heavy, couple of times been to the skip and it's been a bit low, but thats once in a blue moon and filled the car right up!

I just fancy the look of the mig, just a fraction lower.
Just another wish on the long list of "I wants", lol.  ::)

Is swapping the springs over with mv6 difficult and are they expensive to buy?

Sound like self leveling has failed then?

Sadly mv6 lsc springs are only available from vx, which with spring means they ain't cheap. But they are on tc. Pm andyc for a price.

There is a guide for spring replacement.

Also be aware this sort of work will bugger any settings for camber and toe etc.

So fit first along with any other failed or ify parts, then setup, before fitting new tyres if that's on your list as well.

As said, maybe your self-levelling isn't working properly - I had about 300 kilos of flour in my car a while back and the back end didn't drop much at all

If I remember rightly there was a post not so long back about checking self levelling, whether it's working or not.

I think I'll double check that first, cheers guys!  ;)

As you know
I fitted 35mm lowering springs on mine a while back and it has dropped it nicely.

But as previously mentioned, When i'm loaded up with gear, I have issues with speed bumps and steep inclines etc. The only bit that catches mind is the back of the CAT, and even that just scrapes.

The other bit that catches is the Bottom of my Witter Towbar, its a bit 3-4 inch deep plate so not surprised that catches really.

Other than that, i love it.
Looks mean too.

Tbh, i would say you wouldn't notice the LOOKS of a 15mm lower chassis much.... but you may FEEL it.

From the post though it sounds as though you'd like to be able to see it.
In which case i would say 35mm like mine might suit more.

It's not massively hard to do, but as also said before, any work you do will screw with your settings, and toe will be adjusted because of the lowering. This is not something you can set yourself along with the camber etc.

good luck tho, i can describe what you need to do in more detail in a PM if you need.

Hi buddy,

Grounding out is my biggest worry whilst towing, which is why I only wanted it dropped slightly...
Its on a long list of wants at the moment, but with the cam covers, belt and service in need of doing first, its a bit lower down.
Was initially wondering if it's just springs that change and if the current ones could be "cut", but that is a BIG no no, lol.

Hows things with your mig? All going well?
