Exhaust Manifold Gasket Change 98 2.5V6 ELite
« on: 22 June 2011, 22:06:16 »

Hi, I have looked on the forum for any info on changing the Exhaust Manifold Gasket, mine appears to be blowing on the near side - driver only. Are there any guidelines for changing these or is it common sense and streight forward.

Not the easiest job in the world to be honest.  Biggest problem is the manifold studs shearing off.  :y

yes, thats worrying me, would heating them up help to remove them, or is that a no no because of surrounding parts. Would I have enough room to even do that.

Heating them will be beneficial it will help them unwind from the block as opposed to removing the nut...... the studs are cheap from Vauxhall, so replacing them isn't an issue.

Replacement Brass nuts are a good plan (in my opinion) dont know how others feel about this though!

I'd agree with that, but if your manifold studs are still intact, then it's still a bugger to get at the mating surfaces to make sure they're well cleaned up before fitting new gaskets.

Always make sure you smear some copperslip on the gasket surfaces and threads before tightening everything up again.

TBH when i did my drivers side, all the studs came out easily. I still used all new studs and nuts which I had in anticipation.

The most awkward part i think was undoing the bolts at the rear of the coolant transfer pipe and actually getting the pipe itself out. Lots of wiggling!

Never had studs shear personaly on the V6 (unlike the 4 pots).

Access is not easiest but, its not that bad a job to do, its even been know to be completed in three hours in the middle of a field!
