What does it mean to have your car chipped????

I have a 2.2 Diesel miggy CDX. and I tow a caravan. I have heard people talk about having their cars chipped, what is it? and could I have mine chipped, what benefits would it give me, and how much is it.

Chipping is when the engine e.c.u. has its software re-written to enable the engine to produce more power.
It's not usually recommended for your engine, the fuel pumps are fragile enough.

Thank you for your reply. at least now I know what chipping does. and as pumps for my car are £1200.00 I think I will leave it alone.
