Autobox swop
« on: 27 June 2011, 09:07:06 »

Morning all,

My dad has a facelift cdx with an intermittant gearbox fault. He's taking it to a garage to have the oil level chcked first.

If that is ok, he's on about swopping g/box over from his other pre facelift elite (which is about to be stripped) and hoping that will solve his problem. ::)

Question is, how easy is it to swop them over on a driveway?

TIA  :y

Its not to bad, its a good days work. I would change the filter and oil in the secondhand box though ;)

Cheers Elite Pete!

I've just looked through the index in maintenance, but didn't see a guide on how to do the swop.

Is there one, or am I blind as well as stupid??  ;D

I don't think there is but its pretty straight forward, hardest part is getting to the 2 upper bolts (think they are 19mm) and lifting the box up  ;)

Right then, this should be fun, lol.

My dad has the Haynes manual and has mechanical knowledge but I have none and he can't do it himself due to being disabled, which really annoys him!
Is there anything that I need to know that the manual may not tell me?
iirc, there was a post a while back about making sure the 'box was alligned straight or something with the housing??
Does that apply to the swop? Sorry for the million questions, I just don't fancy getting it half out/wrong and buggering my dads car.  ::)

Fit the torque convertor to the box and make sure its fitted properly before offering up the box to the engine ;)

Sorry just another question, does the torque convertor have to come off the car or is it part of the 'box?

My dad used to work on older cars in his youth and is not sure with your last post.

The torque converter lives inside the box. It is attached round the shaft that slots into the engine...

Access to the 6 bolts holding the TC on is through an access hole at the bottom of the box engine side...rotate the engine to gain access to all 6 bolts...then when the box is removed the TC should slide nicely out with the box :y

There is a bung in the front cover of the gearbox which allows access to the torque convertor bolts. I remove them together so there's less chance of damaging the seal. One other thing, don't turn the engine backwards when undoing the bolts ;)

I am presuming that both cars are 3.0lt engines, just make sure you don't put a 2.5 box in a 3.0,it won't last long, other way round is fine though :y
