Big trouble, Miggy letting me down big time
« on: 30 June 2011, 20:47:20 »

Well it all started yesterday when i started the car as always started lovely, drove for 1 min then it lost a cylinder then two, so i stopped pulled the coil pack to find the plug wells full of oil and i mean FULL, so i call the RAC as im working away from home so no tools, cleaned it all out but still missing i got towed to a garage were they replaced the rocker gasket and replaced the coil pack for a new one and replaced the plugs only to find still missing 2 cylinders, after a pressure test they found the 2 were at 50 psi one at 160 psi and the other at 260 psi, now there saying maybe new head gasket, maybe new head, maybe scrap a car i have just had a new cam belt, cam sensor, crank sensor, lamba sensor, and many other new parts too. Does anyone have any idea as to why the cylinders are losing so much pressure. And sorry this is so long... Thanks

Sounds like head gasket and it is not an overly difficult job

More tests required TBH, it may be that because the to cylinders are down that there is bore wash which would also lwoer the compression.

Its rare for a head gasket to fail in that way.

Also, its no good just changing the roacker gasket, it needs the breathers and throttle body cleaning out

It is a 2.2 - don't they go through gaskets more than the V6?

well shes in the garage with the head off and i have been told everything looks fine but the gasket had gone, the fella in the garage doesn't know if it because the head is from a 2L but i heard that that is ok so i have told him to fit new gasket clean it all up and throw it back together he is also replacing the head bolts and checking the valves are seated. im hoping this cures what has so far been the most expensive car i have ever owned.

Probably too late now, but it would be interesting to see the old headgasket.  I'm struggling to picture how it may have failed in order to give the compression test results claimed.

Get some pics if you can.

Well i have the car back now and it seems to be running fine after a new head gasket, i do have the old gasket which i will take a picture of and right a follow up as it may help others in the future. Oh one other thing the garage told me the compression is at 225 per cylinder, is this ok as i think that sounds abit high?
