Advice from those who know better!
« on: 02 July 2011, 16:37:34 »

Hi All

Not been on for a while. But I need your help if possible.

My car is a 'X' reg 2.6 CD with 74K. Due to personal and financial circumstances the car has'nt been used for just over a year. Now SWMBO has told me its decision time either get it back on the road or get rid!! >:( SO after 6 months on nothing I started her today and with the aid of jump leads she started first time. Now I've noticed she's a bit rattely with a lot of exhaust smoke is this to be expected?

Secondly there is a smoke coming from underneath the top part of the engine below where the cam cover meets the metal. Its smell of burning oil but I cant see any drips or spills?

Thirdly I know I need to do an oil change but with the help of Nige (Entwood) we changed the cam gaskets and plugs just over a year ago... could these be leaking again?

Apologies for the long thread but any help greatly appreciated it's just she's to good for the scrappy!!!!! :( :(

Hi Griffin welcome back...

After a year without starting it will most likely take time for the exhaust fumes to clear...pretty sure thats going to be normal :y

Oil burning off will be am cover gaskets most likely...check for oil in the plug wells :) Could just be old oil burning off though so give the engine a decent run and see if the smell goes away...

I would see what she's like after she's done a few miles. Given that its stodd still for so long, a good Italian tune up might be worthwhile pre-MOT ;)

Once you've checked it over, book an MOT and give it a good tune up on the way :y :y

Thanks guys! Possibly a stupid question but can you access the plugs without removing the plenum etc?

yes, you can access plugs without plenum removal on DBW, but you have to remove cable tray to access passenger side, and the oil filler (put cap directly onto cam cover to stop FOD

If you book an MOT a little less locally then it will give you a chance to thrash it a little on the way, although a little warm up then thrashing it on the driveway will help to start :y

Thanks guys advice appreciated.

Would it fail an MOT for smoking oil from a leaking cam cover. Also I think I might put a new battery on what should I be paying for a decent battery?

TIA
 :)

Should get an advisory on cam cover, unless its spraying it out. GM batteries tend to last well, come with a 3 year guarantee too. Think I paid £60 ish last time on trade club....

really worth doing a good visual check, simple stuff, lights, indicators and such. Check for side lights in front head lamps too, also check rear suspension quite often you can get a broken spring....

Like I have  ::)

Ok just had a look and all 6 plug wells are clean and dry? Does this rule out cam gasket leaking?

Not necessarily but give the engine a good run in your driveway...if its just old oil it will soon burn off :y

Hi guys a little more help please.

I've decided after a year to put the Omega back on the road. Plan of action is:

New Battery
Oil change
Good Clean

Is there anything else mechanically/electrically I should do before taking it for a spin to the MOT station.

TIA
:D
