HT Leads - How to test them?
« on: 16 July 2011, 20:05:52 »

Further to my misfiring car.

I need  to find out if I have a faulty plug lead before I lash out on a new set.

I have a multimeter and I understand that I can use this to establish if the leads are OK.

Can anyone tell me how I would go about that?

Thanks in advance.

It'll take more than a standard Multi-Meter to get the accuracy required to test the continuity.

If it were me, I'd start the car in the dark (pref with no street lights around) and physically look at the leads for signs of arcing.

set it to resistance and measure the resistance in ohm,s
generally speaking anything much over 10,000 ohms resistance is knackered!!! the longest ones may read around 12thousand and would be just about serviceable,
disclaimer ;D
this is a very old tried and tested method that has always served me well, however times change!! having said that i still use it today to test leads!! :y

I wont edit my post (above yours) because I want people to know how much of a tit I am  ;D

I was meant to write resistance, but said continuity instead.

Seeing what  bugger it is to get the leads off a V6 I'll have to wait for a dry day. Thanks for the advice all.
