Finally got my CEL to stay on
« on: 17 July 2011, 18:43:16 »

It came up with these codes.

P zero743 Torque converter clutch circuit (electrical)

P zero 748 Pressure control solenoid (electrical)

Any ideas or advice?

Check engine light. But those are gear box related.  :-?

Anyway, similar here maybe?  Post 16.

strangely enough, the connection on the left side if you're looking at the car from front to back wasn't twist locked, it was sitting on it but not locked in. I'm going to take the car for a spin and see what happens.

So I drove it around in what i'm positive would've caused the light to come on and it didn't. However the check engine light is still on. I'm assuming if i pull the hot cable off the battery for a few it should reset correct?

No. And you should remove the negative from your battery first whenever you disconnect a battery.  ;) ;)

You can disconnect it all night if you like  ;) but it won't reset the EML light. You need to find out what's upsetting the car & fix the fault.  :y

It was those codes up top. I found a plug that wasn't hooked up so I hooked it up. Does the CEL automatically shut off or can you erase the codes without a code reader to see if the come back up?

EDIT: BTW this is the fastest response time i've ever had in this site thanks!. I may not be phrasing things correctly. Basically i'm trying to reset the CEL to see if the codes come back up now that I hooked the connection back up.

Some codes re set after a number of clean starts, some don't.

Needs a code reader/scanner to clear the codes then see if they return, indicating they are current, and obviously that the fault still exists.

Fingers crossed that's fixed it though.  :-/

There are only 2 ways to "reset the CEL" as you call it

1. Remove the fault then

a) on some faults the light goes away immediately
b) on some faults it takes 20 or so "clean" starts to put the light out

2. Use a code reader to actively reset the system

Disconnecting the battery will have exactly the same effect as dancing around the car naked, 4 times in an anticlockwise direction, at 3 minutes past midnight.... but if you wish to try either solution .....  :)

That's not right Nige. The light goes out when a fault is fixed, but the ECU remembers for it till you've had 20 'clean starts'.  :y

It's actually hot enough where i live to justify dancing around the car a la nude at midnight just to try and stay cool so I might have to try that. I guess i'll just have to wait.

I know i've done some driving so far and have shut the car off maybe 3 or 4  times and restarted it. 20 sounds a little steep but i'm pretty sure I can do it if i run some errands and cruise for a little bit.

To be honest i could almost kiss Chris for pointing me to that thread because I have been stumped for a long time with this issue and I will be sooo happy if it's something that simple.

Maybe we can just settle for a thanks but in either case if this fixed my issue i'll be happy as a dog inside a kennel full of bitches in heat.

BTW I wish we got some rain to cool down the place here. I'm pretty sure we're going to be hitting 100+ degrees for the next 2 weeks. Roughly about 38-40 Celsius. Not to mention it was 80% humidity yesterday.

Is the behaviour of the CEL / check engine light the same on Federal cars as it is on European cars?

I seem to recall reading somewhere about how OBD was introduced in America to act as a self test of emissions. Is it possible that the CEL will stay illuminated on a Catera until it is reset by an authorised dealer?
