Is the behaviour of the CEL / check engine light the same on Federal cars as it is on European cars?

I seem to recall reading somewhere about how OBD was introduced in America to act as a self test of emissions. Is it possible that the CEL will stay illuminated on a Catera until it is reset by an authorised dealer?

Yeah it was originally made for emission purposes but now a days it seems to cover an array of issues not related to emissions. Anyway I got the light to turn off and I drove around in what i'm 100% positive would cause the sport light and check engine lights to come on and the car acted like a total champ and no CEL or S light!. yaaaaaayy!!!! :D :D :D :D

I now have a fully working Catera Sport. Now I only need to figure out what the deal is with the leveling light.

Leveling as in the rear air suspension. I'm assuming that's what it is anyway. I hear the compressor kick on everytime i turn it on. I don't really pay a whole lot of attention to the rear but i'm assuming it still goes up.

It's a light that says Leveling and it keeps flashing it's on the top of the dashboard in between the oil pressure gauge and the voltage gauge on the right end of the dashboard

You guys must have got a very different dash to us - we don't have either of those on European cars!

Yep, very different! Over there on our cars (well, LHD euro cars) we'd have a computer display of some form, varying (depending on year and spec) from a two line basic seven-segment style display to a full colour square display..

Anyway your levelling light will either be for the suspension or - if it's the equivalent of our 'levelling' message, as Chris says, it's talking about the self-levelling for the headlights (separate from the suspension).. I forget where the sensor is  :-[

Yeah I checked the owners manual. According to it that's the rear air suspension leveling light.

Self leveling suspension we call it over here.

Difficult to say without seeing the cars ride hight. I guess the first thing is to move the level sensor arm and see what occurs.

As there is an error on the dash I guess tech2 would be able to glean more info. For instance the system will throw a code if it runs for too long, assuming there's a leak. But then I don't suppose tech 2 diagnostic system is easy to come by out there without being shafted by the dealers...?

No idea if all this is even relevant to your car though...?  :-/
