Petrol Good - Bad - Indifferent
« on: 27 July 2011, 16:02:57 »

Having own my Omega now for just over a year i have been through the complete list of things to do with regards to cam gasket renewal breather pipe cleaning throttle house clean etc etc. Still after all this the car still seemed to run incorrectly forum members suggested the sucking in of air so this to has been checked and checked again, so now this is my question would i be talking out the top of my head to say that i believe that it,s actually down to poor fuel ie supermarket as opposed to high street garages BP Texaco Essso etc. It would seem that when i put in Branded petrol the problem does not occur and i have also been told that supermarket fuels are inferior to the high street. Would like to hear forum members thoughts on this if even to tell me it,s in fact a load of tosh.   Steve.  :y

both our cars run poorer on supermarket fuel - the prefacelift very noticably so.

as they also run better on some premium brands to others as well.

Try some wynns injector cleaner.
Add it to a full tank of fuel (bp/total/shell etc)
See what happens.

I've known some supermarket fuels have water in them.

Wouldnt hurt to change the fuel filter either.

Cheap enough just to see if it cures it.

Hiya fella, as far as i know there is "nothing" wrong with supermarket petrol, it has to meet the British Standard required. However, other fuel companies do add things to their products, which generally gives better mpg and performance. What it does in the long term to your engine i have no idea, im sure an armchair expert will be along shortly to give an answer. I won't use supermarket fuel because............ i have absolutely no idea why ;D It just didn't seem right when they started to sell fuel  :y

Also NEVER use Tesco 99 fuel in anything.

There was a spate of cars breaking down instantly at the one near me. and the pumps are nearly always off as well so seems to be some problem with it.

Supermarket fuel comes from the same refinery tanks as the "premium" or high street retailers fuel... Sometimes even in the same tankers ;) ;)

But there is a difference... Each "retailer" has it's own unique mix of additives that they add to the fuel ;)

Personally, I find the car does run slightly better on "branded" fuel and TBH, there's a Shell garage near me which is normally as cheap (if not cheaper) than the supermarkets :y :y

^^^^ correct.

And for the sake of 2p a litre or so you might as well spend the extra quid for peace of mind.

I disagree... It's only worth spending the extra if it makes a difference ;) ;) Some cars will run fine (or even better) on supermarket stuff ;) When I say mine runs slightly better on branded stuff, it's not a huge difference and if I wasn't going near the Shell I normally use then supermarket fuel it would be :y :y

All totally irrelevant for me anyway as I use very little petrol and all LPG, from whatever source, is the same ;)

Pardon? It is the same fuel as the retail filling stations. The only problem I have is that if I use Texaco petrol from any source the car plays up badly. Tried it a few times when the fuel was on offer by up to 10p off a litre vouchers when you spent over 50 in Morrisons. I tend to now only use BP Ultimate and that is  from my local Sainsburys and also from the local BP filling station. I have seen the same tanker, in fact followed it once going from the Sainsbury one to its next delivery in the BP one! I think that answers the question on whether the fuels are different in supermarkest or retail filling stations. :y

I really can't say that I can notice any major difference in smootheness or performance using supermarket/branded fuels - my MV6 is just as happy running on Sainsbury's fuel as it is on Shell, BP etc. The only difference I have noticed is slightly better mpg using Shell Fuelsaver petrol.
