I have a 2.2 2002 Omega with an auto box. When warm the car changes gear smoothly and at the correct revs. However when it is cold and first started up the change from 1st to second gear happens at 4500rpm. Is there a temperature compensator on the box to alter the pressure when the gear changes ie when the fluid is warm or cold. Obviously the gear oil is a different viscosity when warm. Or is this just a classic case of old oil that I need to change ? Any advice would be welcomed. Mark

They do that to warm the lamdas up quicker for emissions reasons.Just put it into snow mode for about 30 seconds and then switch it off again - kind of works as a bypass.

    As you have send, all autos have a limter when cold before changing from 1st to 2nd please correct me if im wrong anyone, to stop damage, that is how they are but can be improved with a clean fuild and filter change.

Never owned a 2.2 but on the v engine the change from1st to 2nd from cold is at 3000rpm. Which is normal, and pressing either sport mode or snow mode will snap it out of it. It is annoying.

However 4500rpm seems too high to me. Any auto 2.2 owners to confirm...?



Recommended service interval is 60k for auto box. Which will do no harm at all.

The fluid and filter have no influence on when the gearbox changes. That's all done by electronics. If the car has done over 80k or so, it's a good policy to change the autobox fluid and filter, though.

ive a 2001 2.2 petrol auto,mine drives the same,high revs before changing gear,changing the oil and filter made no difference to the gear change,think its just how they are supposed to be...

used to have a 2.2 with similar situation, however it would change up at about 3000rpm :-/ :-/

I can confirm, slow to change up from cold, not sure of the RPM, can't say I have ever looked, but car not driven hard either, first thing.........

I have just changed the oil and filter in my 2.2 auto box, filled with 6litres of Fuchs Titan ATF and the box now changed from 1st to 2nd when cold at about 3k revs. It used to change about 4k or just over and it used to hold it for a bit.

Not sure how the fluid could have altered this, but that is the only change I have done so must have some effect.

My 2.2 does exactly the same although I have to say that I tend to change the trans oil about every two years and seems to make little or no difference, as soon as it warms up a bit it changes at low revs. I am told that it is supposed to do this.
