To LPG or not to LPG
« on: 09 August 2011, 12:43:23 »

Hi Guys,

I've had a quick search for LPG on the forum but couldn't find a diffinitive answer to the question of converting my car.

I've had a look online for LPG conversions and tbh they all seem a bit pricey and my last insurer said that it would put an extra £175 on the premium so it didn't look as if it would really be cost effective to go fot it.

Can you give me any idea of how much it would cost for parts if i did the work myself and if there are any parts of it that is better to get a professional to do?
How does it affect the performance and running costs of the car?
Is it worth converting the car or just saving the money to pay for the petrol?

Thanks

I have just converted mine and if you take in all the consumables and inspection + modification to insurance, it equates to about a £950.00.

As for your insurance company i would give them two fingers, admiral who I am with charged me £27 and few odd pence.

The other thing you need to look it is the amount of mileage you do and I would say that is the main factor on how long the conversion will take to pay itself back.

Depending on which tank, 800 quid should pretty much do it  :y

Im just finishing my kit of now.
You lose 10 - 15 % on your mpg but gas is pretty much half price  :y
If your going to keep your car or even keep for a while then buy a younger model then yes, do it  :y

With the millege I do, it will pay for itself in about 14 months.
When I scrap this omega, i'll just buy another one and swap the bits round  :y

Hi Guys,

That's the same sort of prices that I was looking at, unfortunately my mileage isn't terribly high but I am looking at keeping this car as long as possible.

Is it better to get a whole kit or to buy individual parts and what are the better manufacturers please?

Thanks

Yeah, I've just messaged him as he has also very kindly offered to read my car to see if we can sort out a little problem I have.

Change Insurance  ;)

No change in my policy for LPG.

You can convert a V6 for as little as £600 if you DIY  :y

If you do more than 10k a year & planning to keep car its a no brainer!

Hi Guys,

Just checked with my current insurer and all they stipulate with the LPG conversion is that it is professionally converted but they don't expand on what is meant by professionally converted.
Anyone else had this issue or know what they actually mean. I used to be a vehicle mechanic in the army and I've been working on cars since I was 16 but I don't have a piece of paper that says I can do it.

An invoice of LPG parts from a LPG supplier was enough for my insurer & DVLA log book update  :y

I had the same thing... Told them it would be fitted by a mechanic and inspected by a LPGA Approved converter :y
