Poor running V6
« on: 11 August 2011, 23:52:51 »

My Omega has started to play up during my hols so I've a few of questions.
1 - While waiting for a train at a level crossing I slipped the car into Park with the engine running, when I engaged Drive the car was slow to pull away like it was stuck in Snow mode and Automatic Gearbox came up in the display. I pulled over and turned the ignition off and restarted the car and it was ok but a little hesitant like it was hunting for the next gear/misfiring when it wanted to change gear. Keeping it in Sport mode made it run ok which leads me to the next question.
2 - It's now developed a misfire on tickover, the odd cylinder or two, and under load although partial throttle it seems ok.
3 - My climate control is either hot or cold, anything inbetween is cold.
Any ideas, oh yeah I found a split in a pipe that the previous owner had taped up with insulation tape but the split has fubared the pipe now and air is leaking out of it on cold start-up (area marked on pic). Cheers Nick.

Have you got any codes from the paperclip test?

That spilt hose won,t be doing the air mixture any good so that should be replaced ASAP.

I would have a good look at the condition of the spark plug holes and surounding area as the plastic cma covers could be leaking causing oil into the plug wells and onto the plug leads .This will cause them to breakdown giving you missfires and poor running so simple check first.

If you are getting limited temp change at cabin ,possible are to look at is the HBV as you may have an air leak at the vacuum pipe or the actual valve may have stopped working ,again simple check first should identify.

These will all provide rough running but a fairly simple fixes.

Best of luck with it and keep us posted of your findings.

That hose is a very common failure of the SAI system. In fact, the whole system can be removed with no ill efects at all.

As a short term fix you can tape it up with rubberised tape as opposed to insulating tape. The pipe only carries cold air (unless the one way valve has failed) so the right type of tape is actually an effective repair.

The air goes into the exhaust manifold, so has no impact on the engines intake at all.

Yes, it sounds really bad - but is easy to fix.

I'd suggest removal personally.

With gearbox limp mode activated and rough running engine. It maybe the crankshaft sensor as I had these symptoms with my crankshaft sensor on the way out, which was confirmed when the engine cutout as I was driving along  >:( >:( >:( and would not restart until cold.

Now I have replaced the sensor the engine is running much more smoothly with no gearbox errors.
