auto gearbox problem
« on: 09 August 2011, 20:57:43 »

seem to have developed a whistle/whining noise, but more worrying is when accelorating hard (ie. kick down)it revs and drives upto 5000 revs but wont change gear (its as if its picking a neutral) but if i let the revs drop to 3000 revs it will change.
the whistle / whine noise seems to be intermitent.but not sure where to start looking for this problem.
is it possible the ATF level in the gearbox could cause this ???. any help thanks in advance. :(

At least checking the level is a good starting point. A fluid change won't do any harm.  :y :y

Hi,

Are you getting any warning lights?
Have you tried the paperclip test to see if there are any fault codes stored?

I get the same symptoms when my car goes into limp home mode.

I've got a sweet gearbox from a 2003 2.6 V6 taking up space in my garage... Not wanting much for it either...  :y

Paper clip and pedal test will do no harm at all, but be advised these methods only read the engine ecu.

They do not read the gear box ecu.

However if it's wineing then surely thats mechanical...? Fluid check/service... Possibly check the solenoids activate correctly via tech 2. Other than that there's not much to do with it other than replace. Which is not as bad as it sounds, auto boxes change Hands on here for fair money usually, then a half decent mech to swap in the new one. My local man will do it for £300 odd for instance.

Only difficulty in changing autobox is its weight - ideally 2 people plus good trolley jack to lower/raise box.  Unbolt torque converter so that it comes out with box.  You'll need to drop both cats (requires long extension & 16mm socket to undo cats from manifold - plenty of plusgas helps).  Allow 3-4 hours with tea breaks to do.  :y
