anyone want to change some cam cover gaskets?
« on: 26 August 2011, 14:26:16 »

Mother T's 3.0 was not feeling well, it would run fine for a little bit, then miss-fire particularly under load.

Changed driver side plugs ok, came to passenger side, plugs full of oil  :(

Not going to be able to get parts now, bet its order in. Not back for a couple of weeks either  :(

Going to strip it down tomorrow ready for when I next come back & fit the gaskets.

Hate working on the V6's so much stuff in the way!

Don't think it would make it that far, it was running quite rough when I was going to take a run to the tip, had to turn back.  :(

Assuming you emptied the oil out, if its still missing, the HT is shagged as well.

Are the wells filling up quick enough to fill the plug wells, if you emptied then before Newent?  You could bring that and Geoff, kill 3 birds with 1 stone :P

Did not bother emptying oil from plugs yet, gasket is fubared, needs changing. Did not want it to leak again and miss fire with motherT driving with dogs on board....

OK. I believe you. ;)

Have you checked the cam cover bolts are tight?

I noticed mine were starting to go just before leaving for Cornwall in July and found most of the cam cover bolts had worked loose. Nipped them up and checked the breathers (clear anyway) before leaving and it stopped the leak. It hadn't got to the point of filling the plug wells though.

In my, limited, experience, if a bolt or 2 are loose, you just get a weep from that bolt.  For it to get in wells, I think the gasket has to have failed

Understand that, but wondering if that would get you to Newent though ;)

Yep, in the long run the gasket will be toast, but mine was leaking because the gasket no longer met both the head and the cam cover. :o That's how loose the bolts had got. Nipping them up did stop the leak in my case.

If the ignition system is still intact, I'm sure it would get to Newent. Could always pack a syringe just in case it needs bailing out on the way. ;)

Yes perhaps I should have bailed the oil, and maybe nipped the bolts up. But I can't make Newent, had things booked that weekend for some time.

Just hope the HT lead is ok  :-/
