V6 thermostat replacement - Dipstick Removal
« on: 14 September 2011, 17:44:46 »

Hello,

I am trying to replace the thermostat on my 2001 3.0 V6.

Having removed the B***d Bolt with the aid of a female torx spanner I find I do not have sufficient movement to jiggle the thermostat due to the dipstick tube.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the dipstick tube? I cannot see it's base/insertion point at all.

Does it twist off? I am fearful of breaking it!

Cheers,

Andy :-[

never heard anyone need to remove it to do a thermostat before.

I beleive its push fitting, but very tight and easy to break.

have you read both guides?

Thanks for the reply.

The top guide is excellent, but is for the 3.2.

I just can't get the link pipe to move due to the dipstick location. Without moving it I can't get the thermostat to move enough to 'jiggle' it out.

the differences between them are negligable for this job.

I found breaking the seal between the transfer tube and the thermostat housing was at least as frustrating as removing the B*****d bolt.
After I had done the job I learned that the easiest way is to leave the b*****d bolt in place (but not tight), remove the thermostat bolts and use mole grips to waggle the thermostat body until it is free to move. Once the seal is broken take the b*****d bolt out, twist the transfer tube 90 degrees (so the bracket isn't stuck behind the dipstick) and pull it out (towards the battery). :y

You can also lever the transfer pipe by its "wing" (the part that b-bolt goes through). Once you have turned it up/out behind dipstick/lift bracket you can lever it outwards with a pry bar or similar to breakl the seal

Yep. this is the key, IMHO. Break the seal with the thermostat housing loose but the 'stard bolt still holding the pipe in place.

Then slide the thermostat off as far as you can before it contacts the 1,3,5 cylinder head, before removing the 'stard bolt and twisting the transfer pipe so it can be withdrawn. The transfer pipe is a bit fragile so I would not apply too much force to it.

Many thanks guys!

Yes - I had to twist the transfer pipe from behind the dipstick then jiggle the thermostat from it.

Thanks again everyone :y
