A clunk.
« on: 20 September 2011, 08:57:12 »

Ive had a clunk from front passenger side (suspension area?) for a while (well before polybushing wishbones).
To be preceise 2 separate clunks as Ive fixed one with new droplinks.

Ive..

Polybushed wishbones (got worse)
Changed droplinks (one clunk disappeared)
Changed both track rod ends
Serviced brakes.
Geometry checked and fixed.

There is no play I can see anywhere.

During the last year shocks and springs also changed (top suspension mount reassembled and regreased etc)

This clunk only seems to happen when turning right 90 degrees, so into side roads etc.  No bumps or road surfaces, speedhumps etc bring it on.  It doesnt happen all the time.

Any ideas anyone?

Im wondering if I should do the ARB bushes 'in case' cant see any play, but they are 9 years old  :-/
or has top suspension mount disintegrated or sommat?  Dont really wanna strip it down and check..

Cheers

last time mine had clunk it was the top rubber plate on top of the suspension. un did it all at top and changed it then stopped, only thing could see was the dome shape was different to the old one... dont know if this helps. :-/

Jimbob.... do you recall my calling around your house about a year ago as i wanted you to try and source a " clunk" from my miggy and you had me drive back and to and all around Saltney? well it turned out to be the front shocks that where buggered and was making the same kinda sound you describe on yours...

Take it top baring race wasn't pitted? Does the top shock mount jump when viewed with bonet open and turning the steering...?

Checked steering knuckle on wishbone from under neigh? turn hard against full lock and see if the ball joint "rocks". Crap description of the play but it looks wrong when you see it.

cheers, ill be back underneath tomorrow for another look around.
may swap droplinks...

more playing - its not always when turning, but does seem more promeniant when going right.

Ill try watching suspension, Mark did the bearing race and dont recall any issues - one was quite bad before hand though

been underneath again, each wheel / both jacked up, wheels straight, each l;ock, can find no play or cause.
suspension appears fine.

Took a local oofer for a drive, plenty of clunks, moreso whilst going right, plenty going straight too...we are low on ideas

Ordered some ARB bushes from VX to try, worth it at £2.94!

Hi Jimbob

When i had the same sound it was a nut that linked the ARB to the wishbone on the drivers side not being fully done up. It would happen on hard right hand turns . Once nipped up fully it was fine :y :y.

Play in arb drop links can be fealt from undeneith. Both wheels must be jacked if on the drive though so as to enable access and importantly, to unstressed the roll bar, or it will be rock solid if there's play or not.

not tried like that, they are being changed regardless in the morning, at £2.94 may as well rule them out, plus they are 9 years old....

Yep, may as well for that money. But was thinking more for finding play in the drop links themselves. If worn or loose you'll feel play by grabbing the roll bar to drop link joint, while under the car, and pulling up and down.

Theres also Polly arb bushes btw. ???

aye, had thought about poly, but decided on normal genuine at 1/10th the price.

I like the ride and dont want to get too harsh next.

Any engine mounts or anything could cause this?

Possible I guess, but no experience of that personally.

I don't see engine mounts being linked to sharp right turns TBH  .... my guesss those would be affected by lumps/bumps not turns .... ARB bushes certainly move more on turns... thats their job after all !! ......
