I bought a KDC-309A off Fleabay and tried to fit it yesterday. It powers up, tunes into radio stations and goes through the motions of playing CD's, but there's no noise.

I tried it with a known working Kenwood radio/cassette player and that does the same thing so the problem must be with the cars wiring.

Anyone come across this before or have any ideas why this is happening?

Not one I have seen, sounds like it might be muting, does the stereo have a menu option for muting sense.....

Not to my knowledge Mark, but you're exactly right, that's what it seems like.

I was starting to think that as the other 'known good' stereo wouldn't work either, if there was some sort of external amplifier. Can't see it somehow tho'!

AFAIK, there's no mute facility on it, all it has is the attenuator.

It wouldn't be the way the Iso connector goes into the adaptor perhaps some wires are mixed up being that its from ebay perhaps it was fitted to another car and the wiring has been moved.

Well, I'm no car sparky, but I did check the wires and they appeared to match. I guess it wouldn't hurt to check them out again.

Do you have traffic master fitted?

If so, remove the traffic master mini loom and take it out the circuit (its connected between the body loom and radio)

Did it have a standard unit in previously?

I am suspecting it is a case of it being an amplified Vx system. This means the amp is tripping out  due to the much higher input signal as opposed to the original unit.

Yes, I already did that and it still doesn't work.

Just read your post in the other thread, if the original was the elite Bose system as you suggest it has an amp built into the car so the outputs from the head unit will be as LB suggests tripping the amp out.

So where do I find the amplifier?

And more importantly, how do I bypass it?

if it's the bose system, the amp is fitted to a plastic tray underneath the parcel shelf.

Essentially, the "speaker" outputs from the bose badged head unit are line level (0.7 volts or thereabouts) - these connect to the amp which filters and amplifies them, then feeds the amplified signal back to the speakers.

You therefore have three main choices that come to mind:

1) remove the amp, connect input to output for each speaker connection at the plug which connects to the amp - this is what was done on my old miggy - it works but there is then very little signal sent to the woofers on the parcel shelf so the bass is a bit lacking

2) make a wiring loom to feed the pre-out signal from the replacement head unit into the "speaker" connections on the ISO plug, these are generally higher than 0.7V but hopefully will be low enough to not cause the amp to trip out. I proposed this but never implemented it on my old miggy - but the opinion at the time was that this will work OK - and sound significantly better than option 1 !!!

3) as per 1) - but connect an after-market amplifier between input and output ...

Aha!! It's an estate!! So where do they hide it on the estate?

But if it's to the rear of the car, then what powers the front speakers?

There is an amp in one of the rear panels......best solution is to wrip the amp, sub and loom out, pop it in a box and send it to me....then I will send you my section of loom which will put it into normal mode.....

Why do you want a different head unit?

If you can blag some resistors then I suspect I can show you a simple(ish) circuit that should get it working.
