Not enough room
« on: 25 February 2008, 12:26:17 »

Hello folks,

I have recently purchased a head unit and have everything wired up. However, there is no where near enough room for me to slot the unit back into the dash due to the amount of wires at the back the radio.

Is there anything that can be chopped out from behind the fascia? I have had to walk away from the car after an hour struggling to slide the thing in before the head unit and the dash became cannon fodder for my frustration.

Cheers all,

Sipey - Grumpy and irritated :(

Presumably, with yours being a facelift, you have replaced the double din with single din unit, so can find space below?

Lack of space is a big problem for chaved up non standard radios, but there is room for most unless its designed by an idiot - certainly my factory fit ones have always been OK with phone harness adapter behind there (though my current 2 are prewired, so not required)

it CAN be done, but very fiddley.

I have an after market headunit, and a sizable extra box for MID and remote integration, and a fair few large connectors.
You just need to get your fingers in and position as much as you can above / below where the headunit will sit.

I cannot get my fingers in enough. There is a little room below the unit but no room above - there is a big row of cables and a plastic molding that sits above the head unit.

There are a lot of wires coming out of the back of this radio. I have 3 RCA cables going to the amp. 2 Video cables going out to the headrest screens. 3 antenna cables; - 1 for Radio, 1 for TV and 1 for Sat Nav. A mic cable for the Bluetooth mic and then the usual power and speaker cables as well as a camera cable for the reversing camera and sensors. The power cables are also fused adding to the problem with a plastic box about 1.5" square.

I can push it in but then the radio reception is poor where the antenna gets pinched.

Is there nothing behind there that can be sacrificed?

Cheers folks

Move the fuses to nearer the power source (which is the correct way of fusing anyway), where there will be more room hopefully.

A few things to try

1) Any wiring you can merge into one, I sliced two looms into one.
2) There is space with longer cables to go towards the glove box.
3) There is SOME space under the radio.

I have managed display driver, adaptor loom a non working (as yet) traffic master adaptor and cables to CD changer and amp

If you have Traffic Master (the TM button), that's prob not going to work with your new Head Unit so that can go, its piggy backed into the rear of the VX unit ie,the TM plugs in the back of the VX HU then the HU cable plugs in the back of the TM plug.

Its not one those Ripspeed DVD head units is it, coz there sort of designed to stick about 1/2 inch out of the Din unit with the supplied spacer.

I don't have TM Zirk.

No it's not a ripseed and is designed to fit flush. When it is in, the facia sticks out about the same distance as the TC button. It is an odd size so had to chop the dash to fit it but it looks good. Just got to get the damn thing to slide in without pinching the cables.

I think I have broken the aerial in my attempts to get the thing in yesterday as the radio now has poor reception. At the moment the thing is in the boot waiting for my knuckles to recover and my temper to calm :-)

I just went out and took the ashtray out mate but there is no hole behind it - or do you mean remove the 2 screws that hold the bottom of the facia in place as well and try to bend it out of the way a bit?

Sorry for being a pain folks. Never had this kind of trouble installing a bloody radio before :-[
