 Ey up

 I'm getting fed up with CD-Rs skipping in my car - even trying a brand-new CD burned at the slowest speed possible. It does skip regular CDs too, but not nearly as often...

 Firstly, is it a bad idea to use one of those CD lens cleaners in the changer - the ones that have the line of little brushes about an inch from the centre?

 If that doesn't work, is there a way of cleaning it up and getting it working perfectly?

 If not, what options do I have - will one of the higher-spec OE units work better? If so, can I get one of the NCDC units (preferably with phone kit, for the three times a week I'd need it) at a reasonable price... and can they later be paired with a colour screen (when my bank balance is healthier...)? I'd not mind a GID setup, but it'd have to be cheap... in both cases I'd be looking at integrated satnav, too...
 Otherwise, I'm looking at aftermarket stereos - Kenwood do some cracking double DIN CD-DVD-satnav units, but £650+ is a bit much right now...

 What I want most of all is to keep it looking factory - no silver-and-blue efforts, and if I need a fascia plate, it's have to match the climate panel's dark grey.

CCr 2006 doesn't like CD-RW or CD-R --- only the "real deal" -- so says the manual !!

Not compatable with CDr`s and you have probably now strained the laser by using them - hence th skipping of ordinary discs also. Check out previous threads in the forum, as this has been aswered quite extensively before.

CD laser cleaners are OK if you are a smoker, but other that scraping the tar from the top of the lens, they appear toserve little use.

A laser replacement is an expensive job, but will still not allow the use of CDr`s

As far as vauxhall replacement options, I`ll leave that one for some of the other experts to answer.

NCDC needs either GID or CID, won't work with MID.

If you buy a NCDC and GID already paired, it *may* work, but you will struggle to upgrade to a CID at a later date, unless you have the donor's PIN.  So get in delivery mode, then pair up in your car.  Both Marsk_DTM and I can pair/depair,  dealers *should* be able to but feedback I'm getting is 'it cant be done', which is incorrect.

I agree that cd-r's wont play in a ccr2006, however, using Nero software I was able to make a copy cd that would play on any cd player and it works just fine in my ccr2006.  If i've understood what Dave has told us before, the problem is in the way that a pc "writes" the data onto the disk, so maybe Nero does this differently even though it wrote at 48 speed.

No, from what I understand, is that although a std laser can read CDRs, it seems to put extra strain on the focusing coils, and after a while is unable to focus on CDrs.

I'm expecting mine to pack up, as I always use CDRs, always have.  Mine seems happy with certain brands, but skips on cheaper ones...

As said befor3e -- it's not so much the program as the way they are made --- CD-Rs are "burnt" whereas CDs are pressed. I believe, on a burnt disc the laser has an extra layer to negotiate --- they are much more prone to surface damage too -- all adding to the strain
