Hi all, alarm is going off even when car is unlocked. Car had been parked up for a week with no problem until today. I swapped the cars about. Was fine for three hours until an hour ago now keeps going off. Only way to stop is to leave the key in the ignition with it switched on, not running. Remote will open & lock the car but not shut the alarm system. Even tried disconnecting battery withing 15 secs of ignition being switched off. Alarm immediately sounded. Perfect timing as usual now sun is going down. Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks

Weel seems a mouse was not the problem, swapped cars over 7 put this one back on a near lever surface & alarm has stopped going off. Managed to lock it with key, will brave tomorrow. Heres hoping for a quiet night.
Any ideas on what difference a slope would seemingly make, although i believe this theory to be unrealistic

I don't know what the problem may be but it seems lots of Omegas have the alarm horn disconected. Mine parks on a slope and no problems.

Where would the alarm sounder be on a 98 car & how would you shut it up?

Try disconnecting the bonnet pin switch - seems to be a favourite here

If car has been parked up for a week, it could also be that the voltage on the alarms internal battery has dipped below its normal level, and the constant going off is warning you of this.

Try giving the car a few hours on the battery charger, or go for a decent drive to replenish the battery voltages

Power sounder is under the plastic scuttle under the windscreen, driver's side.
As for shutting it up ........ Pass! :-/

Take it out. Wrap in a towel, drop in a bucket of water or attack with a club hammer depending on your feelings towards it.

They tend to play up when the internal batteries have failed and leaked all over the board, so chances are it'll die as soon as it's disconnected from the vehicle.

Thanks for the replies so far. When this farce started on friday I ttook the car out for a half hour drive to give it a spurt f juice so to speak. Yesterday evening it went off for no reson again, 30 seconds then stopped then a again for 4 or so seconds then stopped then 4 seconds then I took it out for another half hour drive. Alarm went off once whilst driving. Only for a few seconds. I parked car up again unlocked & it goes off once every 5-6 hours only for the 30 seconds. Car will now be off the road fro a few days as it will be having the gearbox changed. Will try putting the battery charger on for a bit to see if this helps.

Definately sounds like a knackered power sounder to me. Best policy is to disconnect it I'd say.

Did one better, removed it. May refit once car goes back on the road & the car battery is constantly charged. Whilst its off is it possible to replace tha battery on it?

There have been a couple of reports of them draining batteries and of fires starting in that area.

When the batteries fail they leak conductive goo onto the board. The failure mode then depends what it shorts out, I imagine. Mine had certainly shorted out the driver to the sounder transformer, which was drawing current and getting warm. A little more of that and it could have got nasty.

The permanent live feed to the power sounder is by a poxy wire, but it's fused at 80 amps, so not exactly well protected. If I ever decide to refit mine, I'll add an inline fuse to the supply wires.

Batteries can be replaced if the board has not been totally mullered by the leaking. They are just fairly standard PCB mounted Nicads. The plastic case will need to be cut open and subsequently glued back together though.
