wonder if it is a ccr600 with car400 cassettte door done for some strange marketing purpose

No, very different internally, and there are probably more versions of CD Ready CAR400`s than there are versions of CCR600 so if there is a "Copy" its more than likely the other way around. Actually thinking about it, there are more versions of CD ready CAR400`s than there are of NON CD Ready ones, but the NON CD Ready ones are in greater number as they were offered throughout the VX range as an entry level model that ran the seperate display.

Spec wise they are virtually identical though. The CCR600 is probably closest to the CAR400 MKIII though, if an internal comparison had to be made.

just out of curiousity here.... why do you know that? lol

Generally, CAR400/CDR500/CCR600 interchangable (obviously, the CAR400/CDR500 can't drive CD Changer unit).

A minor correction . .
There are indeed some Versions of the CAR400 that will drive a CD unit, and are easily identified by an "O" where the cassette buttons are.

 8-)

I spotted that yesterday on a MK4 astra (G). Convinced myself that it was a 600 but as you say, marked up 400 on the cassette flap! Doubly strange because we have a MK4 astra and it's fitted with a 600 + changer!

ngrain, the CDR500 either made by delco (which is probably your best bet for standard fit) or VDO, will work a treat.

Make sure to get the correct 4 digit security code and want to be paying no more than around £50. Will slide straight in, with the help of some single din radio removal tools to get the old one out.   :y

Ok, so, in your opinion as a man in the business,

would you think then, it better to go for say a kenwood head unit that can do the satnav, bluetooth the phone and obviously play music instead of updating the three already integrated components separately? (I don't have a phone prewired - currently using an annoying earpiece).

Also, were I to do this, would I still be able to use the display on my interface?

Kenwood do a connector, for the TID (I don't know which one I have!)

basically, without getting cost silly - what would you recommend?

Any aftermarket stereo is going to offer a vast improvement over the "Built to a budget" system that Vx fitted as standard.
