which wire is it and where exactly is it?

ive had a good look, but am unsure, tried to pull the radio out again, even had an audio shop try with their more substanstial keys and they gave up and said try vx, which i'd rather not.

Radio aerial? Cellular Aerial? GPS aerial?  Which one are you looking for?

The one in the footwell is normally very obvious, difficult to miss it  :-/

If you can't see it, post up a piccy of the footwell, and somebody will point it out

You are going to have to get to the back of your head unit with a little adaptor care of Halfords --- if you are thinking of splicing in along the lead you are likely to open it up to all sorts of interference problems

best get to vauxhall then to get them to lever the unit out...

Whilst you are quite correct that you should not cut and splice into any leads, there is actually an unpluggable joint in the drivers kickwell, and its much easier to plug into this using off the shelf adaptors than to try to lever out head unit and mess around with the fragile connector on the back that will almost certainly fall out when the new lead is plugged in.

you won't see the lead until you remove the panel to the right of the throttle, 2 screws, one is under the sill cover.
